Mission: The valentino achak deng foundation (vad) is a us-based non-profit organization working to increase access to education in post-conflict south sudan by constructing and operating schools, libraries, teacher-training institutes, and community centers. The foundation's first major project was the construction of the marial bai secondary school, which opened in 2009 with a pilot class of 85 students chosen from thousands of applicants across south sudan. The marial bai secondary school now offers a variety of extracurricular activities designed to help students develop leadership skills and engage in community service including: student government, drama and debate clubs, boy scouts and girl guides, competitive sports programs, and social action groups.
Programs: Marial bai secondary school, located in south sudan, is a high school for 520 students, 300 of whom are housed on campus, along with staff. The holistic curriculum focuses on country standards for math, science, english, and history while incorporating vocational training, such as agriculture, manufacturing and trade skills. Advocacy for girls' education and peace solutions in south sudan are a separate aspect of the overall programming that is incorporated in events with other global leaders around education reform and access to education as a basic human right.
