Mission: Urban watersheds research institute, inc. Is a colorado non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide professional resources through seminars, conferences, research, technical support, scholarships, intern programs, and other related activities to scientists, engineers, and other professionals involved in the planning, designing, and managing of urban watersheds, their water resources, and ecologies.
Programs: During 2017, urban watersheds research institute (uwri) worked with the university of texas at austin (uta) in establishment of the national center for infrastructure modeling and management, under the support of the us epa, to promote and extend the us epa swmm and epanet software applications, and potentially other applications. Swmm and epanet are two foremost tools for assessment of watershed hydrology and pipe network hydraulics, respectively, and are perhaps unparalleled examples of technical community accomplishments conducted as a partnership of stakeholders from all avenues of professional practice. Built over decades with participation from regulatory, academic, consulting, owner/operator, vendors, and institutional support under the continuing leadership of the us epa, these tools are used around the world as 'first choice' software applications in many situations. The epa determined that a sustainable center charged with the responsibility of overseeing its swmm and epanet software applications, and potentially other applications, was an advisable next step in the furtherance of these tools and provided funding to develop a center for sustainable water infrastructure modeling research. Going forward, the team striving to create a sustainable center for infrastructure modeling and management will expand to include a wide range of academic, private and public sector entities. As a starting point, however, the team includes representatives from several institutions that broadly come under the umbrella of two lead organizations - uta, and uwri. Key participating institutions under this umbrella are brigham young university, texas tech university, and north carolina state university. And, of course, the us epa has a pivotal role not only as the source of funding for this venture, but as a source of advice and as a foremost regulatory agency supporting the goals and objectives of the program.
held six training classes related to stormwater management and flood control for engineers, managers and other professionals in related fields. Class content is mostly technical, but some include topics related to stormwater management policies and legal considerations. Continued software development for use by the engineering community working in various water resources fields.
