Mission: United roots engages and empowers marginalized youth in socially innovative ways. We accomplish this by:arts and media training, instilling confidence and developing talentscareer and workforce development, cultivating work and business skillscommunity engagement, building bridges to local organizations and employerswellness services, creating a safe, sustainable environment for youth to heal and grow.
Programs: Youth impact hub: the mission of youth impact hub oakland, a program at united roots, is to support the leadership of low-income youth of color in creating an equitable, life-affirming economy by providing socially innovative training, collaborative co-working space and access to networks and resources. The youth hub fellowship is a comprehensive, yearlong social entrepreneurship-training program for emerging young leaders ages 16-24 that are creating positive change in low-income communities. Youth hub fellows gain:business skills: develop a business model, strategy and 10-minute pitch presentationpersonal skills: increase 21st century skills (collaboration & teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, public speaking, leadership, etc. )seed funding & resources: receive access to business advisors, pro bono support and financial opportunities to support launch of an enterprisementorship: work with professional mentors from impact hub oakland and the local business communitycivic engagement experience: implement a product or service that benefits the communitythe 2017 youth hub fellowship provided weekly business classes for 5 months with mentorship from adult business leaders. United roots organized a pitch event on may 13, 2017, for youth hub fellows to present their ideas to the business community, with fellows receiving seed funding and access to no-interest loans. Youth in the fellowship launched 9 youth-led social enterprise projects in 2016, and had access to united roots youth impact hub co-working space monday through friday from 12-8pm to meet with business partners and clients. Throughout the yearlong fellowship united roots provides office space, conference rooms, computer access, a printer, wireless internet, a phone, media equipment and more. determination: a program in partnership with urban peace movement, supports young black men to advance their personal and professional goals. Weekly sessions at united roots offer participants cultural healing practices, media production training, paid employment opportunities and community organizing through the statewide alliance for boys and men of color and sons & brothers initiative. gameheads:a program in partnership with united roots and fiscally sponsored by united roots,gameheads prepares youth and young adults for a career in the video game industry. Gameheads connects young people to the tech field through electronic entertainment, and participants learn how to code and design video games, websites, apps and more. Gameheads offer a weekly training program during the school-year for up to 25 young people and an 8-week intensive summer program. In 2016-2017, gameheads youth worked on building over seven video games, were trained in providing it services and built websites for paying clients. For more information go to: gameheadsoakland. Org
