UMMA center has changed my life. The company I worked for the last twenty years moved out of state. So I found myself without a job, 43 years old, no specialized training and no computer skills. Thanks to the UMMA center I'm learning how to use a computer , and increasing my skills. Also at UMMA Center I was thankful to hear of a program CareerLink. This program helps with job skills, resume building, and interviewing skills. The great benefit is that you have the chance to gain an internship with a company. So thank you UMMA for being here for the community and for making this big impact on my life and family.

Attended a workshop on Social Emotional Intelligence. This was a very informative session and I was able to share the information with my colleagues and clients. UMMA has many free resources available to the Community. I work with at risk first-time moms and I was delighted to find out UMMA offers continuing education, GED, computer training, resume assistance, yoga, free computer/printer use, and food pantry.

I volunteered at UMMA Center over the summer and it was such a rewarding experience. The dedication put into this organization on a day-to-day basis is so admirable, and the relationships built within its are truly genuine. The opportunities provided at UMMA are easily accessible and beneficial for anyone who walks in the doors! I love the place, the people on both sides of the door, the work they do, and I can't wait for next summer to come so I can join the UMMA family again.

The issues and struggles that the UMMA center aims to break down have not always been so prevalent to me. I was honestly surprised that such an organization was in place and doing the work they do (instructing GED classes, providing nutrition and giving out clothing to name just a few) was in place and helping the community in Lake County. After volunteering at the center a handful of times, I can honestly and wholeheartedly say that the individuals who work at the center do what they do with a smile on their face and with the hope that the individuals who walk through their doors will have the opportunity to shut out the struggles that have been tormenting their lives for good. I really do applaud those involved with the UMMA center and the UMMA mission for bringing to light issues that the general population choose not to embrace and react towards. Bringing such a positive and life-altering light into so many heartbroken people who are striving for a better life must be acknowledged and dealt with and this is exactly what the UMMA center does on a daily basis. Keep it up!

From it's food pantry to GED preparation to it's computer training, the UMMA Center has been providing quality assistance in Lake County since it's humble beginning. This organization is top notch and it's hard to imagine what they will be able to achieve over then next ten years with their dedicated donor base.

I became acquainted with UMMA Center more than 7 years ago and I can tell you that from the Board to the staff, there is a great deal of care given to executing the goals they have created to align with their vision to help their community. This leadership helps the team remain focused and able to perform at a very high level.

UMMA Center accepts people at whatever learning level they currently have and helps them achieve greater levels of understanding. Any donations made to the UMMA Center are stretched and managed frugally. I highly recommend this organization. There is no other entity in the community that is reaching the people that UMMA is reaching.

My name is Hattie Carter, I am a former student of the UMMA Center and I am now a volunteering TA to Ryan Gayer, the computer teacher. He is an excellent teacher who is very patient with the students and will answer any and all questions you may have.

The UMMA Center is dynamic in helping their students, from the neighborhood and surrounding areas, in accomplishing their goals in education , in three major areas: The GED Program , which helps students that did not receive their diploma in getting their GED; The Computer Training Program for those that are new to computers and those that want to enhance their skills and proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Apps; such as computer basics, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and including internet usage. The computer classes are given in English and Spanish. Upon completing the computer courses you will receive a certificate for completion. This can be added to your portfolio, which will definitely help those of you who wish to sharpen your skills so that you could possibly get a better paying job, advancement on your current job or just start you own business and they also offer a Financial Literacy Program, which can help to improve your knowledge on how to budget and how to balance a check book. The UMMA Center also has a Food Pantry to offer assistance to anyone in need of food.

By taking the computer classes, I have increased my computer savvy to where I can think seriously about a home based business and I don’t have to pay anyone to do my computer work. If you would like to increase your skills in order to boost your hiring power, or just for your own benefit, I highly recommend that you think about taking one or all of these classes that are offered to the community by the UMMA Center for “FREE” once again for “FREE”. You just can’t let these opportunities past you by. The UMMA Center is a great place.

Thanks UMMA, after working for a company for 21 years, I lost my job, I didn't know what to do. All the experience that I had was nothing for the companies that were hiring. I need to know more about Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc. I heart about UMMA and I call Ryan Gayer and started to learn more about all those program at the same day. I'm very happy to be part of this organization and I'm definitely learning a lot. I found a job where I don't need much of those program, but I'm still coming to classes, because I feel comfortable coming here. Ryan is on excellent instructor.

I immensely enjoy volunteering at the UMMA Center every time I have the opportunity. UMMA is an amazing organization that provides its community with great resources and aid. Volunteering at the UMMA center made me more aware of the disappointing issues at hand in our community today. UMMA works to diminish these stresses from those that are burdened by them. This organization takes every step it can to help its clients. Personally I interviewed a few clients this past summer and they couldn't help but be extremely appreciative of the UMMA Center. This organization has changed so many lives and will continue with great success in the future. I will definitely come back and volunteer at the UMMA Center with any opportunity I have!

I first learned about UMMA when the founder informed my husband and I about his idea to tackle poverty in the Lake County area. While it sounded like an impressive and ambitious plan at the time, we never imagined how much of a real impact it would make and how it would flourish as it has over the last ten years. We have met people whose lives have not only been enhanced and improved by UMMA's work, but significantly changed due to the opportunities, services and basic needs that UMMA has brought to them. I have no doubt that the success of the UMMA Center comes from the sincerity, dedication and enthusiasm of its team of staff, volunteers and board. Due to the numerous benefits that that the UMMA Center brings to the community, it is one of the organizations that is always on our list to support every year. We look forward to seeing more lives improved through it.

Over the course of the years, the UMMA Center has been very generous with the community of Waukegan by providing low-income families with bags of food, free GED classes, clothes, shoes and many other necessities. The times that I have volunteered, I have seen the needs of the people and I have heard their problems in reference to their living conditions. When people who complete the GED program leave, they are often in tears because they thought they would never be able to accomplish something but with the help of the teachers here, it is possible and they are always grateful for the help and always express their gratitude in one way or another. The number of unemployment rates is very high and people are having to go through many things because of their economic instability.
Indubitably, the UMMA center has helped hundreds of families across the Lake County region and others as far as Kenosha.
It's important to have centers like the UMMA because poverty is a serious problem that has to be dealt with, not only here but world-wide. The center inspires people to be the best they can be and to be kind and helpful to others who may need assistance in any way, shape or form. The community needs people who are willing to do things like this and people who will look out for them when they are in distress.
I am thankful that the UMMA Center is here; if it weren't, the community would be very different than what it is with their help here.

My name is Kirill Atnashkin and I recently joined UMMA volunteering team. I wish i could say that reasons i joined were from the kindness of my heart however I am in a burden to complete community service for judicial reasons. This is only my first week here and I already enjoy spending time here. UMMA Center is focused to assist people in need of food basic needs and education. this center provides powerful tools for people to accomplish their goals. Even I'm doing simplest task i would love to take a step further and be more active with people who are walking through the doors seeking another chance, change or meal.
I was born in Russian in suburbs of Saint-Petersburg and migrated to United Stated when i was 14 years old. Me and my family can share personal experiences of need of food and help and I'm grateful that my mother met my step dad and he gave us all an opportunity in the land of the dreams. However, I am still uncertain whatever I want to do as a career because I am lost in a career field. Full time employed I don't have much time and finances to afford school and in past years I showed little effort to be or achieve a degree.
With UMMA Center center is open to people of all ages and all ethnic groups to help and by giving my time, effort and heart i hope to change lives of some people including mine. I rate my UMMA experience as a 4.5!

Volunteering at the UMMA center has been an experience that I will never forget. I am a student in the area and it was great to find an organization that helped the local community in the way that UMMA does. My favorite part about this organization is that while it has a food pantry and clothing drives, it also has classes that helps people learn and better themselves. This place is a great example of how to give back to a community in the best way.

This is by far the best non-profit I have ever been involved with. From top to bottom, the donations and grants acquired by the organization are always put to the best use possible. One would think that a smaller non-profit might suffer from lack of organization, yet the UMMA Center has had quite a bit of success at generating excitement to give back to the community. The leadership and vision has always remained constant, well communicated, and well executed. The money acquired from the Digital Divide Grant from the state provided a huge boost in the center's ability to serve the community providing a newly furnished and equipped computer lab. I have witnessed, first hand lives that were impacted by the training provided at the center.

I visited UMMA to learn more about the organization and to see first hand what services are offered to the community. I was very impressed by the administration and staff and their dedication to, and implementation of, their stated mission. Offering the underserved In Waukegan and nearby communities educational services and classes, a food pantry and cooking classes and general support, offers UMMA clients and interested residents a place to receive positive reinforcement and hope for a brighter future. I am considering becoming a volunteer.

For over a year I volunteer as a Financial Literacy coach and work with individuals on all aspects of personal finance matters. I offer ideas and suggestions to reduce monthly living expense and create monthly budgets, understand credit, how to balance and maintain a checking account. The goal is to help individuals gain a working knowledge of personal financial matters and also help manage monthly income / expenses. I also work with individuals helping them understand their credit score, how credit reports work and what they can do to either establish or re-establish good credit.

I have been volunteering at UMMA Center since its inception and I am very passionate about. I was ecstatic when UMMA Center received the funding for setting up new computer lab; this resolved many technical problems we had to deal with obsolete donated computer. We have this enterprise level computer lab which the UMMA clients have access to and serve the community in general. Volunteering had been very satisfying experience for me, knowing that even few hours spent goes long way for the community.

UMMA initiatives are beyond any racial and financial bounds, throughout the years this organization grew in many folds and offered a variety of programs, not just education or counseling. I am particularly moved by the “Adopt a Refugee” initiative, everybody has their own personal struggles but it’s hard to comprehend a refugee’s life in new country. UMMA recognized this and has been successful at organizing, supporting and delivering help to refugees.

UMMA Centers staff have high level of dedication, putting in countless hours in operating the center and keeping it on track, motivating the volunteers and donor in the tough economic times.

I congratulate UMMA’s Staff, Board, Directors and Volunteers for being model organization.

I have been volunteering with UMMA Center since it's inception and over the years they organization has stayed true to it's mission of serving the undeserved community of Waukegan and surrounding areas, while experiencing tremendous growth. I take great pride in associating myself with this organization and often talk to others about how big of an impact this organization is making. Their board of directors, staff and volunteers work every hard to get the most out of their budget and have an impeccable record with financial audits.

I was able to hone my professional skills while working on projects for UMMA center which helped me further my career. Seeing the hard work of this organization and results through their students, it makes me want to contribute more and gives me the satisfaction that one is looking for from their efforts.

Keep it up UMMA!

I love what UMMA Center is doing to help those in need to empower themselves through education, resources and friendly, sincere support. They truly care about every individual who walk through the door and about the success of the community as a whole. The people who they serve actually do verbalize how much the center is helping them and how much they enjoy coming to see the staff who they know are there to truly help. UMMA Center is a gem in the world of non-profits that I am honored to have learned about and now be a part of on a regular basis as a volunteer.

My Daughter, Yvonne Maffei from my halakitchen.com has been teaching classes once a month at Umma. The staff-Arshia Ali-Khan (Director of Business ) and Hira Siddiqui ( Director of Operations and Education) are a blend of such a great pair of powerful women. I just love what they're both doing to enrich this community by reaching out and teaching this world .

I volunteered at the UMMA Center at the 2009 Refugee dinner. At that time I was 10 years old. The UMMA Center made it very possible for someone my age to help them with their events. I like the UMMA Center because they have tasks ranging for all ages that need to be done. I am glad to have volunteered at the UMMA Center and I really hope to do so in the future.

Helping out as a volunteer at the UMMA Center has been rewarding in more than one way, knowing that every person that walks in through the front door has the opportunity to receive the full benefits of this program kinda makes you feel like "Santa's little helper" since you're the one to pass out the free clothes and food :).

UMMA center started of small but started to expand quickly in a short time span. I believe that its the efforts, team work and leadership of the employees that it continues to grow and become a vital part of the community and its honest open book policy of letting the donors know how its resources and donations utilized. Its a pleasure to donate and volunteer at the center.Keep up up with the noble task of educating and empowering the community UMMA center.

This organization is so small yet has such a great impact on our community today. As a volunteer I have been able to see the work the UMMA Center has done to bridge the socio-economic gap. Not only are the volunteers caring and compassionate, but the services they provide are of the utmost quality and efficiency. I expect to see even greater programs and campaigns to stem from the UMMA Center in the near future.

This was started in a room with just an idea to help people. I personally didn't think anything of it and thought to myself, "why not." I am so glad to be part of this organization. I wish to help this organization as much as i can so that it can help others better themselves.

Working with UMMA has opened my eyes to the never ending demand for education. UMMA Center offers free GED, Money Management, and Computer training classes. All of the teachers at the center work avidly with every student to ensure that they're learning the necessary skills to empower their lives. The center also has a food pantry that is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12PM-5PM. If you're looking for a warm and understanding welcome, this is the place to visit!

The Mission of the Urban Muslim Minority Alliance (UMMA) Center is to empower the lives of underprivileged individuals in Lake County by providing educational support and community resources. I've been involved with the UMMA Center since 2006. I started as a volunteer G.E.D. teacher, became a member of the Board in 2007, and I've served as Board president since 2010. As you can see, over time my commitment to the UMMA Center has strengthened. The Center is providing invaluable service to many, many people in Waukegan. It's amazing to see people become empowered through the Center's educational programs! This is a place definitely worth checking out.
