Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Health, Nerve, Muscle & Bone Diseases, Neurology & Neuroscience

Mission: The Tourette Syndrome Association of Greater Washington (TSAGW) is a non-profit (501C3) agency and chapter of the National Tourette Syndrome Association serving Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland. Tourette syndrome (TS) is a hereditary, neurological disorder characterized by tics - rapid, sudden, involuntary movements or vocalizations - that occur repeatedly. Many individuals with TS also experience symptoms of other disorders, particularly Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder. Although TS is found in 1 in 2000 individuals in the general population, it remains widely misunderstood by the public and misdiagnosed by health care professionals. The mission of TSAGW is to serve and support those whose lives are affected by Tourette syndrome, to advocate on their behalf, to foster community understanding, and to educate health care providers, educators, employers, and the public about Tourette syndrome.
