Mission: Tobacco free allegheny's mission is to change the community norms surrounding tobacco, making it uncommon to see, use or be negatively affected by tobacco or tobacco smoke pollution (second hand and third hand smoke). As part of pennsylvania's tobacco prevention and control program, our work is based on the best practices for comprehensive tobacco control programs published by the centers for disease control and prevention. The goals identified are designed to guide programs in their effort to significantly decrease tobacco related morbidity, mortality and economic costs.
Programs: The organization provides comprehensive tobacco use prevention and cessation programs in allegheny county, pa. Allegheny county, pa has historically had one of the worst rates of maternal smoking in the country. The organization's goals are to raise awareness of this issue and provide programs to assist people in quiting and prevent non smokers from starting to smoke. Subcontractor mercy behavioral health provided cessation services to allegheny county; in 2016, they served approximately 1,500 patients in various areas, including mental health patients, the incarcerated, and low socio-economic populations, that would find it difficult to find cessation services elsewhere. St. Clair hospital provided cessation services in allegheny county, with a concentration on pregnant women and maternal health. They worked with federally qualified health centers to establish smoking cessation programs and to train fqhc employees in smoking interventions. Subcontractor addiction medicine services worked in both prevention and education. In 2016, they helped school districts throughout allegheny county strengthen tobacco policies and provided other prevention projects, serving allegheny county's school age population of roughly 200,000 students.
