Mission: Tidewater Literacy Council was founded in 1969 to provide free literacy tutoring to adult nonreaders in the Tidewater area of Virginia. TLC has since served the literacy needs of over 3,900 adults.
The inability to read is interrelated with a number of social conditions that are addressed by a variety of human service organizations. TLC's mission is "Empowering adults and improving our community through literacy".
Trained volunteers work one-to-one with nonreaders or low level readers to develop the basic literacy skills needed to function in society. Tidewater Literacy teaches adults to read. One by one. Privately. Confidentially.
