Mission: Theaterworks produces high quality, contemporary theater that is relevant to our audiences, engages a diverse community, and provides insight into the human experience.
Programs: The company's artistic quality and record of achievement are embodied in its history of growth and accomplishment. Similar to past years, in fiscal year 2017 theaterworks produced 5 plays in its regular subscription season with an additional holiday show. Theaterworks has more than 5,100 loyal subscribers who renew and purchase season subscriptions as early as eight months before the season starts in september. 5 play subscription prices range from$129 preview subscriptions to $250 classic plus subscriptions. Subscription sales total more than $922,000 - up 10% from the previous year. In addition, theaterworks sells single tickets to each of its productions, with the holiday show being all single ticket sales. Single ticket sales for fy17 totaled more than $829,000 - up 75% from the previous year. During fy17, theaterworks produced two block-buster hits with off the chart single ticket sales numbers. Relativity, starring richard dreyfuss, opened the season with more than $242,000 in single ticket sales. It is now theaterworks' highest grossing show in its 31-year history. In the spring, theaterworks produced the musical, next to normal. This musical grossed $222,000 in single ticket sales taking the number two spot in highest grossing shows. The next highest grossing show is $144,000, showing the significance of these two shows. Theaterworks also produced a world premier, raging skillet, about the life of the real life chef rossi.
theaterworks owns and manages the historic 1927-built property at 233 pearl street, known as city arts on pearl. The facility houses the theater's business offices, performance and rehearsal venues, production and costume shops, dressing rooms, and storage space. It also serves as a home for a diverse family of nonprofit arts organizations and local artists all paying a fraction of market level rents and sharing resources. During fy17, theaterworks began a campaign to raise $1. 5m in private funding, and $2. 5m from the state of ct to finally take on the long overdue renovations needed at 233 pearl street. The renovations will include upgrades to the major mechanics of the building - hvac, elevator and electrical upgrades, along with renovations to the lobby and restrooms, and a major overhaul of the back stage area including dressing rooms and artists' restrooms. At the end of the fiscal year, there were more than $1m pledged to the project.
theaterworks has a modest but growing education program which includes an intensive internship program for local college and high school students and a number of all-free student matinees throughout the season. The matinees are primarily available to hartford public schools who have limited resources for arts education with the majority of students having never been exposed to live theater. With recent grant funding, theaterworks greatly expanded the number of students served to over 2,000 and continues to be able to provide free bus transportation in addition to the free admission. In fy17, theaterworks hosted 15 summer apprentices who worked with the production department learning scene shop skills - construction, scenic painting, tool handling and project planning. The summer culminated in an exhibition of their own works of art - transforming a shipping pallet into "something else". The results were - a side table, coat rack, bench, karate belt display, jewelry box and bird houses to name a few. Theaterworks continues to use unpaid interns as much of its show run crews. These students primarily come from the university of hartford and use internships at theaterworks to supplement their college education. Being at theaterworks to see how a professional theater runs behind the scenes is invaluable to them - real world experience before hitting the real world.
