Mission: We save hungry children and their mothers from eating trash and living in garbage dumps. We provide them with clean food and water, shelter, schooling and a future. In 2017, we provided aid in zambia (sub-saharan africa), sierra leone (west africa) and in india (asia).
Programs: Supporting primary schooling of trash-dump children in zambia, sierra leone and india. Throughout 2017, the unforgotten provided financial support to 130 children in pune, india; 30 children in lusaka, zambia and 43 children in freetown, sierra leone. These children were previously not attending school and instead were living on landfills, looking through the waste for food to eat and items to sell, earning about 50 cents per day. The unforgotten enrolled these former wastepickers in school, paid their school fees, provided them with uniforms and school supplies. We also provide the children with extra tutoring. As of december 2017, our aid to these children has been very successful. All of the children are progressing through school and their academic performance has been commendable. The children have not returned to the landfill in order to eat and earn a few cents, but have instead focused on their studies. The mothers have been very supportive of the children's education and grateful for the aid.
microlending, skills training and business start-up support, for trash-dump mothers in zambia, sierra leone and india. The mothers, and their children, prior to our aid, were living on landfills, looking through the waste for food to eat and items to sell. The unforgotten provided microloans to these mothers, for the purpose of enabling them to start their own businesses, so that they can become more self-sufficient in the long run, and less dependent on the unforgotten for aid. The unforgotten also holds workshops with them to provide them with skills and business training. The unforgotten also provides them with initial capital investments to enable them to start up their businesses. The unforgotten supports 95 mothers in sierra leone, 21 mothers in zambia and 30 in india. Women in sierra leone are part of savings groups. Our sponsored women have been able to earn a small profit, and to repay part of their loans. As they gained more experience, the unforgotten increased their loan amounts, and provided them with more advanced business training. The families are still dependent upon the unforgotten for support, however, they have made small strides on the path towards independence.
the unforgotten provides food assistance to the families in our program. Prior to our intervention, the wastepicker families suffered from hunger and malnutrition. We provide school lunches in zambia. The unforgotten provides supplies, and the mothers in our program prepare lunches for the children to bring to school. We have a small kitchen and utensils our sponsored mothers use. We also supply maize meals to the families to supplement their meals. In sierra leone, we also provide meals for the children. We have a small kitchen and cooks that prepare the meals. Oftentimes, the meals we provide are the only ones the children eat during the day.
