Founded by bob metcalfe and john sculley, poptech is a 22-year old nonprofit committed to showcasing the vanguard of emerging technology, science, exploration and creative expression. From the renowned poptech conference, to its globally recognized fellows programs, collaborative initiatives, and exploratory labs, the organization stretches well beyond the notion of passive idea sharing. Instead, poptech cultivates an environment focused on robust exchange, instigation and action on a diverse set of challenges. Central to poptech's mission is a belief in the power of networked collaboration as a tool for social change. (see schedule o for complete description) poptech's social innovation fellows and science fellows programs represent core mission commitments of poptech. The programs were founded in 2008 and 2010 respectively. The goal of the programs is to accelerate the impact of future leaders, innovators and scientists through training, mentorship and recognition. The programs have produced a 170-member alumni network whose work has positively affected roughly 300 million people in over 105 countries worldwide. Poptech fellows have achieved their impact by: 1) creating transformational technology platforms that are deployed worldwide; 2) developing new distribution models that allow a product, service or humanitarian aid to be widely deployed; and 3) utilizing human-centered design principles to generate solutions that scale and replicate. Poptech initiatives are exemplar of our ability to facilitate unconventional cross-sector collaboration. In addition, poptech explores unique areas of global interest through poptech labs and salons, consulting projects, as well as its annual thought leadership forum. The production of impact and social change media is a key to poptech's mission. This capacity enables us to do unique reporting on projects and share insights, in addition to capturing our own work; we routinely create documentary bodies of work for select partners. In 2017 we continued a multi-year partnership with microsoft to design and facilitate salons focused on human creativity. The results were published in poptech edition: supercreativity. In 2017 and into 2018 we are exploring the exponential power of networks. This work is an extension of an eight-part video series entitled the changing world of work, created in 2015. Poptech and n square, a consortium of funders focused on nuclear non- proliferation, have been partnering since 2015. Our initial work focused on connecting our networks to increase the potential of impactful work. In 2016 we worked closely on a number of initiatives focused on enhancing public engagement around escalating nuclear threat. In 2017 our collaborative endeavors were focused on facilitating engagement between the nuclear threats community and a variety of academic institutions including rhode island school of design, west point military academy, massachusetts institute of technology and harvard university. Our relationship with n square is ongoing, with new projects unfolding. Through these activities and more, poptech continues to be recognized as a leading participant in the field of social innovation.
