My daughter doesn’t remember her life before her single-mom got cancer. She was almost five. Since then her life has been a rollercoaster of middle of the night ambulances with me going to the ER not knowing if or when I would return. She has always been her firecracker-fun and beautiful self but has had difficulty holding on to friends and being quiet or doing what she’s told to in school.Around the time of her first summer camp with The Movie Institute at Kamp Hollywood, her daddy was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. By then she had lived with me through two rounds of chemo and then having a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant. Her father had been great about keeping her every-other-weekend and being a significant part of her life.Long story short, when she started 7th grade later that year, she was asked to write a Get to Know Me essay. She wrote that the worst experience of her life was when she found out that her mother’s cancer had come back and the best experience of her life was KAMP Hollywood! She had been counting down the days until her second experience with The MI which is in about a week at KAMP HOLLYWOOD.She has found so much self-esteem in getting to do something that she loves and so strives to do it very well. Kudos to your organization for the scholarship that got her into your doors and for your wonderful staff and community!
MI is a great way to give back to the community and help young people at the same time. While it's great to be out working on a project, it's also fun to bring those stories and lessons learned back to workshops and camps. The hands-on learning is why kids come to MI, and I feel good that everyone is learning tried and true methods along with the latest and greatest tips and tricks. MI is the best place for this kind of industry training and life skills development, and it's fulfilling to support their programs.
As a former participant of The Movie Institute's Kamp Hollywood summer camp, I can't say enough about this incredible organization and the lasting impact it has on young people. They’ve crafted a truly unique approach to youth development by teaching life and leadership skills through the art of filmmaking and motion media. The opportunities they provide go far beyond just learning how to work a camera or act in a scene; they build confidence, foster teamwork, and encourage creativity in ways that truly empower kids and teens.
From the first day, participants are immersed in hands-on experiences that allow them to explore every aspect of film production. They’re not only learning the technical skills—like directing, screenwriting, gear training and even stunts—but they're also gaining invaluable soft skills. These young people are learning how to communicate effectively, solve problems creatively, and think critically—all in a supportive and inclusive environment where they’re encouraged to take risks and express themselves.
The program staff and mentors are passionate and experienced professionals who genuinely care about each participant's growth, both as artists and as individuals. They model professionalism, resilience, and leadership, showing young people what it means to work with integrity and passion. Seeing these teens go from shy and unsure to confident, creative leaders is truly inspiring.
This organization doesn’t just teach kids how to make films—it prepares them for life. They’re creating a space where young people feel seen, heard, and valued, and they’re using the powerful medium of film to give them a voice. It's rare to find a program that is so well-rounded and impactful. I would highly recommend this program to any young person looking to build a brighter future, as well as to any parent looking for a meaningful, growth-centered experience for their child!
The Movie Institute has shaped my son in his passion of film making. He is with the institute for the past 3 years and these years has been a great learning and it continues. He attended Kamp Hollywood every year with each year learning different aspects of it,and loves to be in the workshops.I recommend Movie Institute for the kids who has the passion in movies. And wishes them all the best for their journey with the Institute.
The Movie Institute is an amazing organization. My son was hooked on day one of his first camp and continues to enjoy and grow with the program year after year The staff works with each of the children to help them develop their skills and foster their passion for creativity.
I was recommended this program by a family member of mine, and I have taken five of their classes. Two Kamp Hollywood, one Halloween Horror Camp, a Screenwriting course, and the Directing class. Although I knew a bit going in, what I got out of it was a group experience which allowed me to observe and examine different perspectives. Their Kamp Hollywood and Horror Camps were the standouts of all of the ones I have done, and would most recommend.
Our son Max attended his 2nd year during the summer of 2023.
This has enriched his learning and has helped him build leadership and collaborative skills.
His family is very proud of his accomplishments during his time at the movie camp.
Many thanks to Tracy and her team for giving him the opportunity to show his talents.
This organization needs to continue to be supported so that our youth have another positive environment to thrive in.
Warm regards.

Having worked with MI for over 10 years, the fact that I have returned year after year says a lot. The staff, the students, and the immeasurable impact their programs have had on people's lives make MI a fun and rewarding organization to work with. As generations ingest more and more of their information and entertainment from visual media, it becomes immensely important not only to teach those generations how to produce and interpret that media but also to use the process to develop purpose and life skills within them. I hope to continue to help MI grow and spread its good work to greater numbers of kids.
Our family has enjoyed the exciting programming the Movie Institute provides for 5 years now! First, our son participated and when our daughter was old enough, she joined in and they have a blast. I appreciate the dedication to helping kids learn the important soft skills in life while they discover all the aspects of movie making. This is a company with heart and soul and I look forward to seeing them grow in our community!
Previous Stories
Our son has been able to think big about stories from an early age and the Movie Institute supported his creativity and interest since age 9 with their programming. Thanks to this amazing non-profit, he’s been learning about the craft of movie making and so much more: team work, self-efficacy, leadership, growth mindset, grit, resiliency, and social development. Three years later, he greatly looks forward to engagement with the various offerings throughout the year so much so that his younger sister who’s currently 8 has caught the “bug” and can’t wait to participate! We value this organization and all the investment they put into the community and it’s kids. What a great non-profit to know about!
I had the privilege of witnessing the Movie Institute in action during their Halloween movie workshop for kids on Friday, October 13, and I can only describe the experience as nothing short of incredible.
It was awe-inspiring to watch these young individuals take on responsibilities, work together in harmony, and create a movie right before my eyes. This real-time demonstration vividly showcased the invaluable lessons on collaboration, leadership, and integrity that the Movie Institute instills.
The Movie Institute stands as a remarkable organization, and their programs, like the one I had the pleasure of witnessing, deserve both support and recognition. The impact they have on these budding talents and the values they impart are truly five-star worthy!
I knew this camp was special when my son returned home from his first day and immediately asked me if he could do the camp again the following summer! The amount of hands-on experience with film and lighting equipment is incredible. Students write, act in, film, and edit a commercial and short film. All commercials and films are screened at a movie theater with families and friends, and a variety of awards can be earned by students, such as best cinematographer, which my son won in 2023. So cool!
I sent my daughter to Kamp Hollywood and she had an amazing time! Great staff, engaging, and she wants to go again next year. I love what they are doing.
I am so glad I found the movie institute. My shy, quiet son looked forward to it every year. He came out of his shell and was supported and encouraged by the staff. He has continued filming, editing, creating his own scripts. He's taken an interest in live theatre as well. The amount of time and effort put into this camp is astounding, we are so grateful for their dedication.
He has aged out of the camp, but if he could continue to attend this camp in some other capacity, he would. Well worth the money.

As an entrepreneur I seek opportunities that are fun and exciting. Several years ago I met Keith Duncan through an Arts Association. I learned about MI and immediately became fascinated with what they do. From student development programs to Camp Hollywood to short films, I was inspired. Keith, Martha and Tracy actually encouraged me to go into film production.
I'm so impressed with their unwavering dedication to the art but most importantly, to the kids they reach and mentor. They are amazing human beings and their infectious spirit and energy is what fuels their success.
This non-profit organization instills teamwork, creativity and problem solving in youth in such a fun way - producing a movie from beginning to end. My son has learned so much and enjoyed his role as a script writer and prop manager. My daughter may join him next year as she has seen how enticing an experience it is! Highly recommend for kids to become involved.
Movie Institute is a place where professionals allows you to not only gain leadership, creative, and important life skills, it is a place that allows you exlclusive access to techniques and equipment most film students could only dream about. I will always remember my time at Movie Institute and will always be thankful for their time and energy that they are willing to pass on.
Led by the best in the industry, Keith and his team do an amazing job getting kids to tap into their visual creative side. Love working with this group and can’t wait to see what they create next!
Between 2008 to 2010, I was an instructor for Movie Institute and it was one of the best experiences of my life. One, because it was so rewarding to see young people who were hungry to learn and to watch their reactions when they found skills unfolding that they didn't new existed. The students learn so many things including how to collaborate in a team environment and at the end, they got to bring their families and friends to a local movie theater to watch their films [literally] on the big screen.
The work that Keith and Martha Duncan are doing is really quite unmatched by anything else I've ever seen. Their program is so robust and they are so dedicated to reaching each student that comes through the institute to help them explore and learn not only about film making, but also about themselves as individuals. It's really quite magical what these folks are doing and I would highly recommend this to any parents seeking something truly unique for their children. The Movie Institute is not only educational, but also gives students a wonderfully fun and stimulating experience, something they'll remember for a lifetime.
Movie Institute is the only place to consider sending your child to for real movie making experience. The staff, teachers and overall experience at MI is second to none. This non-profit is tan by some of the most genuinely caring people I know. Whether is contributing in donations or sending your kid to have a truly unique experience, Movie Institute is the way to go!
Amazing expertise! Very friendly environment! I had an amazing time every camp! I will never forget every experience I had there!
Extremely passionate and selfless staff! Participants learn not only movie making specific skills but impressive teamwork and leadership skills as well.
Went to KH from grade 6 to grade 9, and worked there for two summers past that as a mentor. Could not recommend it enough! If it weren't for KH I wouldn't be working in the film industry today.
Movie Institute is an amazing organization. Their programs teach much more than filmmaking. The kids in the program learn leadership, cooperation, teamwork, and the value of hard work. The Duncans have dedicated their lives to this project. The diversity of staff and students makes Movie Institute a great example to children of working together in the real world.
The Movie Institute is an amazing nonprofit organization built around kids learning a trade in the video/film industry. They instill teamwork, creative thought, and problem solving skills to which individuals are able to learn and apply life skills. I have been involved with The Movie Institute for many years in many different ways. My own child attended their week long flagship summer program and flourished in sharpening her skills to work as a team and complete a project in a designated amount of time. I highly recommend The Movie Institute for a top rated nonprofit!
I have been working as a professional commercial director in NYC for almost 10 years now, and the thing that sparked it all was The Movie Institute. I was just 12 years old when I attended my first workshop there in DFW where I grew up, and I knew I was hooked from day one. They helped guide me through the early stages of my education and career planning over the years as a participant, and eventually as a volunteer staff member down the line. I can easily say I would not have been nearly as equipped to head to film school at NYU and then start my directing career after had it not been for The Movie Institute's programs and the caring, truly good people who run the program and teach the courses.
I am a TV location manager in Los Angeles. My first exposure to the industry was attending The Movie Institute's Kamp Hollywood and Halloween Movie Workshop in Middle School and High School. The instructors encouraged me to pursue a producing role on the first project I worked on, and I've been pursuing a career in producing ever since. I met lifelong friends there and highly recommend it to any parent whose kid is a creative type! Every successful filmmaker held a camera for the first time and Kamp Hollywood is the perfect setting to introduce a child to the magical world of filmmaking.
The Movie Institute is a breath of fresh air for students who are seeking an avenue to explore and discover new skills that are applicable in everyday life. As a mentor and former director at The Movie Institute, I have witnessed young adults come alive discovering what they are capable of and what they can do and achieve with the basic skills taught to them, experiences, encouragement and mentorship provided to them through this program.
Over the years I have worked with The Movie Institute and Kamp Hollywood from the other side of the camera as they say in helping to facilitate the camps. To say my work was fulfilling is an understatement. Seeing the joy in the hearts of the students can't be describe with the rightful merit it deserves. Literally a picture is worth a thousand words as the look on the participants faces tells the story. They learn and experience training and lessons that will serve them for a lifetime.
Words can’t describe the joy I’ve received from working the Kamps that MI provides. Seeing the kids light up and blossom in such a small amount of time with skills they can take into everyday life is priceless.
My personal experience with The Movie Institute (TMI) has been beyond my expectation. Their innovative lessons and out of the box thinking have been tremendous for our students. I believe TMI have had the most impact on our students over the past 10 years. The creativity and encouragements they provide our students through their lessons are second to none. I am truly excited to have got the opportunity to know TMI closely and to personally see the confidence and leadership they inspire in our students.
Both of my children have attended Kamp Hollywood for multiple years. My daughter was so inspired by what she experienced in this hands-on, active learning environment that she is now studying cinematography in college. The founders of the Movie Institute are fantastic in their dedication to supporting young people. The team of volunteers and subject matter experts at the Movie Institute love their work with kids, and it is great to see the self confidence and excitement of the students as they apply what they have learned to create a film. The application of the Movie Institute's program in an after-school setting is invaluable to helping kids develop their overall potential and expand their view of what career path they want to pursue. What the kids learn is both creative and analytical, helping each child develop in many ways through the program. This is a great nonprofit for folks looking for an organization to support.
The Movie Institute is an incredible organization. As someone who went through their program and now works with them on a regular basis, I see what kind of impact it has. I get to see faces light up when they're creating something they love. I get to see gears turn in their heads as they work together to solve problems. And the best part, I get so see their sense of accomplishment and pride when they see all their hard work in the finished product for the first time.
I cannot begin to explain how much an organization like Movie Institute would have positively affected my youth trying to learn about an industry that almost never catered to the practical applications like MI does. Back in those days, most organizations geared toward youth in film were mainly concerned with packages and scamming the parents out of as much money as possible while promising stardom for the kids. MI loves the craft of movie making and strives to nurture that same passion in kids, giving them real life skills in a business that doesn’t normally think kids are incapable of. It was more than an honor to be able to be a part of that.
As a parent of a Movie Institute alumni who also had special needs, I am forever grateful for the opportunity afforded to my son to meet new people and to build social skills. The staff at MI really do care about their students.
The Movie institute is the best example of what a non-profit can do for the community and how to be a positive influence on young people!
Awesome organization run by awesome people! Kamp Hollywood was an amazing experience for our kids. We loved the fact that they were treated as adults and trained to work on actual professional equipment, learning to create movies and commercials from idea inception to filming to screening. A+
The Movie Institute has made an immeasurable impact on my life. The staff, the curriculum, the lasting friendships are beyond words
Phenomenal people who gave me phenomenal opportunities. The people here genuinely have hearts of gold. I was a 13-year-old with a passion for filmmaking, and my family had no way of affording their summer program, Kamp Hollywood. My mom reached out to founder Keith Duncan personally, and I was allowed to come for free. I would go for years to come and go on to work at the camp as an assistant. The connections I made there still serve me to this day. The friends I made there are now my most frequent and capable collaborators. The generosity from the people at MI had an incredibly positive impact on the course of my life.
Our twins discovered Movie Institute and Kamp Hollywood and learned so much! The film business, script writing, acting, leadership, teamwork and so many life skills. They blossomed in their experiences there for many years. They were taught by professionals in the industry and we all 4 value those personal and professional connections today.
The Movie Institute has partnered with our Mindbender Academy which is a STEAM camp for our middle school students for several years. They are professional and make learning the Art of movie making fun for our students! I have witnessed their teachings and they always get 2 thumbs up from participants
Went to MI the first year they started. Was an amazing time. Very good memories and this is a fantastic way for kids to learn about the movie and tv industry. HIGHLY Recommend.
Our foundation asked Movie Institute to come to the neighborhood middle school to provide an afterschool program. We have gotten to see the students blossom as they gained confidence and skills from being in the program. These low income, diverse students were amazed at what they accomplished and took great pride in showing their movie. I think the students had more fun than the wonderful professionals who guided them, but I can't be certain!
Movie Institute is amazing and my son had the pleasure of attending some of their classes. They test real word skills and make every child feel at home and comfortable. Everyone at Movie Institute is phenomenal not only in character but experience in the film industry. I couldn't recommend them more!
I was involved with The Movie Institute for about ten years (2007-2017).
Over that time I saw firsthand how The Movie Institute's unique programs helped kids.
Some kids went on to have careers in the entertainment business, and credited The Movie Institute and Kamp Hollywood as a pivotal moment in their lives that to this day gives them an advantage over others who didn't have The Movie Institute experience.
All kids, whether they end up in the business or not, get a great experience at collaborative effort, channeling creativity into hard work, and challenging themselves to be able express their ideas in a way that others can digest.
The Movie Institute is a unique place for young people to get real-world experience in the entertainment business, but more importantly it gives kids a unique environment where they can focus their creative energy and hone real-world skills applicable to any of life's stages.
Kamp Hollywood, and the movie institutes several shorter workshops changed my life and gave me direction for the rest of my career.
Excellent program in which to elevate your child to a higher level of knowledge in many areas. The Movie Institute is an amazing atmosphere that provides opportunity for working with others to achieve dreams and goals of high standards. Learning and creating with others of the same goals is at a peak. Older kids learn from the younger as do the younger from the oldest.
The rewards are great and long lasting that ever child needs to build confidence and self pride.
