Mission: The mission of the maryland center at bowie state university is to serve as a resource and advocate to the citizens, institutions and communities in maryland. The center raises awareness and provides education that assists marylanders in overcoming disparity issues that include health, education, economic status, and social settings by helping them to optimize their potential well-being.
Programs: (hdco, hdsc, hdta) to promote the dangers of cigarette smoke, drug, and alcohol use and its health concerns to residents of various maryland counties, including prince georges, frederick, garrett, and other counties.
pgc edc youth careerconnect program (ycc): summer capstone challenge, an exciting program for students in prince george's county attending the prince georges career academies at fairmont heights, bladensburg and potomac high schools. Eligible students participate in a 4 week capstone challenge designed to provide prince george's county youth with hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (steam) using an interdisciplinary approach and linkages with industry partners providing a path to career opportunities. Students are introduced to next-generation technologies in cyber security, mobility, enterprise collaboration and cloud computing. Students will competitively engage in proposed solutions to real-world industry problems under the guidance and mentorship of ei2 fellows and industry partners such as lockheed martin.
samsha: to develop and maintain a comprehensive, age appropriate, and culturally relevant prevention program aimed at increasing knowledge and changing attitudes about alcohol, drug use, and risky sexual behavior in minority youth, ages 18-24, in communities neighboring the campus disproportionately affected by hiv. This is a 3-year grant.
