Mission: History theatre entertains, educates and engages audiences by creating and producing new works that explore minnesota's past and the diverse american experience.
Programs: Artistic & production: our mainstage season of plays and musicals illuminates historical events, personalities and issues for modern audiences. Over 60,000 audience members attended performances at history theatre during the record breaking fy 16-17 season. During july, 2016 we re-mounted the smash hit "glensheen", a new musical by jeff hatcher and chan poling. The fall season got underway with a world premiere of "teen idol: the bobbie vee story", about the fargo native's phenomenal success as a young performer in the 1960's. For the holidays audiences enjoyed the return of "orphan train", a popular history theatre classic. The timely and provocative "the highwaymen", about the decision and decision makers that determined interstate 94 would roll through the african american rondo neighborhood in st. Paul brought many new patrons to history theatre. "the paper dreams of harry chin" explored the impact of the chinese exclusion act on one family and "sweet land the musical" , based on the popular independent film resonated with audiences in st. Paul and around the state through the support of funding from the arts and cultural heritage fund through the mn state arts board. Sales of season passes increased by 25%.
education: to ensure these stories reach audiences who resonate with them, history theatre is focused on finding ways to welcome new audiences. With our access program history here and now (hhn), we partner with community organizations to mitigate barriers to access by providing transportation, tickets and translation and to provide a platform for discussion of topics and contemporary issues related to historical subjects. This season's community partners included rondo ave, inc. Chinese heritage foundation, mn historical society, rondo and roseville neighborhood libraries, gordon parks high school and the mn department of transportation.
