Causes: Arts & Culture, Historical Societies & Historic Preservation
Mission: To engage the public in a vibrant organization that promotes historical preservation, education, and research that relates to benton harbor, st. Joseph and the surrounding region. The organization seeks to inspire vistors to make a personal and emotional connection to the past by providing on-going historical exhibits and programs that enable all persons to see their present and future more clearly.
Programs: "the museum's accomplishments in 2017 included: the feature exhibit, open free of charge to the public, "evidence found: explorations in archaeology" provided a glimpse "behind the scenes" with working archaeologists. Artifacts displayed different layers of local history, such as lake bluff park, fort st. Joseph, and local business. Another exhibit, "presidential keepsakes: local collections from the 20th century" captured audiences with unique mementos connecting local residents with national history, such as "little italy historical park project" showcasing this local groups plans and contributions to the area. "on the table: china collections from the heritage museum" highlighted beautiful imagery and stories present in local china pieces preserved by hmcc. The "st. Joseph lighthouse tours" began hosting weekly public tours on the north pier and inside the inner light & fog signal building with exceptional community engagement and excitement. This project fosters the partnership with the city of st. Joseph to open this beacon to the public. Complimenting this new addition, our restored 4th order and 5th order fresnel lenses from the st. Joseph north pier lights continued to grab at local heartstrings on exhibit in "lighting the way: fresnel lenses from the st. Joseph lighthouses. "public programming, including regular outside speakers and programs, and unique events such as the "lego carnivale" along with numerous school programs and tours. The "youth ambassador program" commenced, teaching area youth about oral history utilizing technology acquired in partnership with the smithsonian institution. The smithsonian institution's "museum on main street" posted videos made on the web. These oral histories took place on the north pier and included many maritime stories, being aptly titled, "pier stories. " research accomplishments include replacing all of the maritime heritage trail markers on display in the city of st. Joseph, educating the public on our rich maritime history. Regular publications and newsletters continued to inform members and the public at large. "
