Mission: The coalition to restore coastal louisiana is a non-profit organization whose mission is to drive bold, science-based action to rebuild coastal louisiana through outreach, restoration and advocacy.
Programs: Oyster shell recycling program. Crcl's oyster shell recycling program collects shell from participating new orleans based restaurants and uses that shell to restore oyster reefs and shoreline habitat. Since the program began in 2014 we have collected over 3,000 tons of oyster shell. This year we deployed our first half mile of living shoreline in louisiana's biloxi marsh using 5. 5 million pounds of recycled shell. Revenue and expenses for oyster shell recycling program and habitat restoration program have been combined and are included in the amount above.
habitat restoration program. Crcl's habitat restoration program leads our efforts to restore louisiana's coastal habitats by engaging volunteers and stakeholders to be a part of the solution. Our restoration events facilitate environmental stewardship by louisiana industries, landowners and business leaders and provide valuable education experiences for its volunteers. Participants learn a variety of restoration methods that are employed across louisiana's coast. Crcl has engaged more than 1,000 volunteers this year alone and since the program begain in 2000 we have worked with over 12,000 volunteers and restored more than 4,700 acres of coastal wetlands.
outreach and education. To build support for restoration crcl hosted a series of coastal restoration road show events throughout coastal louisiana. Each event provided a high-level overview of louisiana's coastal land loss crisis including what's at risk and our state's plan for action. Together, we took a closer look at projects and restoration efforts specific to the area where each event was held. Each road show event consisted of presentations and discussion in clear, non-technical language, along with a field trip to see current and future restoration projects. These events were integral to bringing together people who were eager to learn about our coast and those who want to have a hand in making a difference for future generations.
