Programs: Residential: larc operates four community group homes in harwinton, litchfield, torrington and barkhamsted. Individuals who live in independently leased apartments are also supported by larc, with a new three-bedroom supported living apartment recently opening in torrington. Larc also provides in-home supports. The majority of these individuals have elderly families/guardians that are unable to drive. Without our program, they would be stuck at home with little opportunity to get out into the community. A total of 46 individuals are served in larc's residential programs.
vocational day program: approximately 115 individuals are working through larc's vocational program which provides individualized employment programs, job development, placement, on-the-job training and continuous supports to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Larc is providing group supported employment at 10 sites employing 98 individuals. The canaan police barracks and the ct department of labor contracts continue to successfully perform for over 25 years, representing a major accomplishment for any maintenance company. Another indicator of the program's success is the longevity of our clients' employment; one individual recently retired after working 20 years at stop & shop, (see schedule o) three have worked at stop & shop for over ten years, and nine individuals have worked at area businesses between five and ten years.
day support option: the day support program (dso) provides experiences and activities that are stimulating and value based to 43 individuals, many of which have significant medical or aging issues. Larc also offers community experiences through volunteering, participating in the local senior center, and enjoying leisure time activities. Dso participants have recently been acknowledged by the city of torrington for their volunteer efforts for the meals on wheels program.
larc also offers recreation, summer camp, transition, guardianship, advocacy, and transportation services. Recreation: larc's social enrichment program is funded solely by private donations, fundraisers, and the united way and offers critical respite and recreational opportunities for 220 individuals. Activities include bowling leagues, movie nights, overnight trips, dining nights, and special olympics. Camp moe: camp moe provides an outdoor recreation environment where all campers, both with and without disabilities, have the opportunity to develop friendships, leadership, responsibility for self and respect for others. Camp empowers children to look beyond their abilities, and the abilities of others, while supporting them to grow mentally, physically, and socially in a safe inclusive environment. This is a growing program that served 300 campers during the summer of 2017, 33% of which had a special need. School to community transition: larc prepares students with special needs between the ages of 18-21 by focusing on enhancing daily living and social skills, functional academics, employability skill and experiences with the goal of preparing them for adulthood. Among the many life skills taught in this program are budgeting, shopping, banking, cooking, and transportation.
