Mission: To promote economic and workforce development strategies to create good jobs and to engage in programs and advocacy that advance worker education and training; to develop innovative demonstration apprenticeship and career pathway programs in advanced manufacturing, hospitality and other sectors; to develop and strengthen labor and management partnerships in workplace training and apprenticeship.
Programs: Apprenticeship and work-based learning. The afl-cio working for america institute is engaged with labor, employers as well as national, state and local intermediaries in expanding high-quality apprenticeship, notably in advanced manufacturing including the industrial manufacturing technician (imt) registered apprenticeship. The institute is also working with labor, employers and workforce intermediaries to develop apprenticeships for careers in hospitality including housekeepers, chefs, and others in the hotel and hospitality industry.
workforce development: the institute is piloting an innovative apprenticeship demonstration program and curriculum in advanced manufacturing skills training that is directly linked to industry recognized standards. The first pilot has been implemented in wisconsin, minnesota and michigan. The objective is to deliver high quality training to production workers to enable them to become journey-level skilled technicians. Training is planned and implemented through joint labor-management committee structures. Additionally the institute plans to replicate the apprenticeship training model in other locations through partnerships with labor-management entities and workforce intermediaries.
