Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Human Services
Mission: The organization provides care, comfort, and essential services to the critically burned and their families and provides fire safety and burn prevention education to school aged children.
Programs: Camp davidprovides a summer camp experience to burn-injured children, and is unique in that it also includes their siblings and children of burn survivors. The program's focus is to help children learn the core values which enhance their ability to survive injury and gain self confidence, self-esteem and coping skills that will allow them to re-enter and function happily in society. It is a free of charge week of adventure, discovery, and fun. During the year, 65 children attended camp and volunteers contributed approximately 630 hours to this program.
leaders in fire educationin conjunction with the state fire marshal's office and the san antonio fire department (safd), texas burn survivor society (tbss) continues to expand the leaders in fire education program (life). Life is a unique fire education and burn prevention program targeted to 3rd and 5th graders throughout the san antonio community. Safd conducts fire education programs for selected audiences to engage students in awareness and practice of fire safety. Additionally this program collaborates with other children's programs in the area to expand it's reach. An estimate of 2,000 students participated in the life program.
scar management programunderwrites the cost of prescription pressure garments for burn survivors who could otherwise not afford to fill their garment prescriptions. These costly, custom made elasticized garments are used for reduction of scarring. Scar management is, for some survivors, essential to a successful return to society. The program assisted 39 survivors during the year.
