Mission: Tempe community councils mission is to connect those in need with those who care. Tempe community council does this by; convening community, conducting research, determining priorities, implementing effective programs and exemplifying prudent stewardship of resources.
Programs: Commitment to schools in tempe & kyrene (c2s): surrounds students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. This program works with tempe, arizonas three public school districts, local governments and nonprofits to identify barriers to school success and broker or create resources to address these barriers. Programs include: early literacy, counseling, parent outreach & education, pre-school readiness, health and wellness, threadz and family resource centers. Tempe coalition works to reduce youth alcohol and drug abuse with funding from mercy maricopa integrated care and samsa drug free communities; one full-time and one part-time staff are funded under this grant. Parent training and support and benefits enrollment assistance through thrive to five staffs three full-time and one part-time position, funded by state of arizonas first things first.
special programs: support various community projects, initiatives and human service programs to serve the community including homeless prevention, special assistance, transit, and unity/diversity.
tempe financial stability initiative (tfsi) financial literacy is the foundation needed to help low and moderate income households become financially stable. For the 2016 tax year, the tfsi vita tax site prepared 1,162 traditional vita returns at no cost. Tfsi also assisted 394 international students prepare non-resident returns and supported the irs approved online program, my free taxes, resulting in 420 tempe residents completing their returns at no cost or at a low cost. Tfsi returns resulted with over $2. 6 million in federal and state refunds and over $789,000 in earned income tax credits returned to hard working families. Tfsi began offering financial education classes five years ago. In fy 16/17, fsi offered 43 financial education workshops serving 644 individuals through its family financial series (budget, credit & homeownership) for family members ages 6-adult, kids save series at licensed kidz zone and kids club afterschool program sites, and its stand-alone workshops for adults.
