Mission: Teen Start was founded in 1996 to enhance social development in teen and young girls through a series of life skills education, mentoring, experiential learning and cultural exposure activities that will allow them to become responsible, self-sufficient adult. These youth were victims of domestic violence, from single-parent households and/or parents with a chemical addiction. The goal of Teen Start is to teach youth basic life skills and expose them to cultures that will assist in developing employable skills.
Programs: Teen Start independent living training is performed during after-school and summer hours to lessen the incidence of youth becoming involved in negative behaviors during out of school time. Youth are provided mentors, participate in support groups and skill developing activities. Educational workshops are provided including domestic violence prevention. Anger management and conflict resolution are an essential portion of these workshops. Youth are assessed using positive life plans. In addtion, family support and counseling is available.
