Mission: Seri works to create a world where electronic products are repaired and recycled in a way that promotes resource preservation, the well-being and the health and safety of workers and communities.
Programs: Sustainable electronics recycling international (seri) administers the "r2 (responsible recycling) standard for electronics recyclers" as the primary tool for achieving its mission. This standard promotes best industry practices relating to environmental, health, and safety in the electronics recycling industry. In 2016, seri maintained and enhanced the r2 standard, including forming and facilitating the efforts of the multi-stakeholder technical advisory committee that is charged with revising the r2 standard to assure it addresses advances in technology and practices for protecting the environment and worker health and safety; and implementing quality control measures to help assure conformance to the standard by electronics recyclers. sustainable electronics recycling international (seri) conducts education and outreach activities to promote environmentally responsible reuse and recycling of electronics. In 2016, these activities included: developing and disseminating educational materials focusing on the collection and responsible management of end-of-life electronics; conducting webinars for electronics recyclers regarding best environmental, health and safety management practices; speaking at conferences about responsible electronics recycling; and publishing a monthly newsletter aimed at educating electronics recyclers about responsible recycling practices. sustainable electronics recycling international (seri) engages in activities aimed at building the capacity of electronics recyclers to responsibly manage the material they process, specifically those that are currently managing electronics in a manner that is detrimental to the environment and/or human health. This work includes: identifying geographical areas around the world where electronics recycling is being performed without (or with limited) environmental or worker safety practices; conducting gap analyses to determine which best management practices are missing; providing training to electronics recyclers through webinars in these geographical areas on best environmental and worker safety management practices.
