Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Arts Education, Music, Performing Arts Schools

Mission: Stanford jazz workshop produces educational programs and performances by assembling a community of the best performers and teachers of jazz with students and listeners of all abilities and backgrounds.

Programs: Four weeks of immersive education and performance activities that include in-depth instruction in jazz theory and musicianship (beginner through advanced), individual instrument and vocal master classes with leading jazz artist faculty and emerging professionals, intensive coaching in jazz combo performance and improvisation skills by leading jazz artist faculty and guest artists, a student performance showcase for all enrolled students at the conclusion of each weekly program, and tickets to attend nightly stanford jazz festival concerts. Education programs, in the organization's 47th year of operation on the stanford university campus, include giant steps day camp for musicians ages 11-14, two weeks of jazz camp for student musicians ages 12-17, and one week of jazz institute for advanced jazz musicians ages 18 through adult, and selected musicians under age 18 by audition. Sjw also recruits a combo of exceptionally talented young jazz artists in their early twenties for two-summer residencies as mentor fellows who perform, receive advanced coaching by senior artist-faculty members, and serve as junior faculty members under the guidance of sjws top jazz faculty. Mentor fellows receive modest stipends, plus room and board, and have multiple opportunities to perform during each of their two summers in residence. Five to six young musicians are selected from among the country's leading young jazz musicians, making this among the most competitive opportunities in the country for advanced pre-professional jazz artists/teachers.

stanford jazz festival - annual series of premiere jazz concerts featuring distinguished jazz legends, top local jazz artists, and sjw alumni and other emerging professional musicians that are performed concurrently with stanford jazz workshop's education programs, with some additional concerts taking place prior to the start of education programs in mid-july. Artists have included over 59 national endowment for the arts jazz masters, many of whom have appeared multiple times and are integral members of the organization's distinguished artist faculty. Sjf attracts approximately 10,000 attendees each summer, with many concerts selling out well in advance of performance dates. Sjw students are invited to attend all sjf performances as a part of their education residencies. Appearing on each summer's festival line up are numerous sjw alumni who have well-established careers today as some of the leading musicians in this highly competitive field. Alumni also teach our students.

sjw also offers numerous outreach clinics, workshops, and other educational opportunities for students and adults during the non-summer months of each year that include jazz theory, instrumental instruction, composition and arranging, and combo and big band formats for receiving high quality instruction/coaching, plus opportunities to perform in the area.
