Causes: Basketball, Children & Youth, Education, Sports, Youth Development Programs
Mission: Stamford Peace Youth Foundation uses high level basketball instruction, training, and competition as well as academic support, to positively influence young people and help them achieve their full potential on and off the court.
Results: Beyond Limits is now working with over 250 students in the 3rd through 12th grades. Today, we support even more non-athletes than we do athletes. Over 80 percent of our participants are from families eligible for free or reduced-price school lunch, who benefit from our heavily subsidized fees. Our greatest success has been the degree to which we continue to uniquely serve this historically underserved segment of the population, thereby narrowing the achievement gap between society's haves and have-nots. From one team of 9-10 year old Stamford boys in 2008, Stamford Peace has grown to more than 1,000 young people today across a variety of basketball and direct academic support and enrichment programs. From its first three graduating classes alone, more than 20 Stamford Peace alumni are currently playing basketball at the collegiate level, with many more of them attending college while playing only recreationally. Moreover, we can count many of our former participants among the ranks of our current coaches, who are thus paying forward the lessons they themselves learned as part of Stamford Peace.
