Mission: Our mission is to provide spaces where individuals with disabilities and their families can access recreational opportunities and participate in adaptive sports. Through our work, we will spread awareness, encourage connections and friendships, foster a sense of self, and enhance quality of life. Ultimately we endeavor to build stronger, supportive and brave communities, who embrace and celebrate diversity.
Target demographics: People with physcial disabilities, youth and young adults with physical disabilities, families, caregivers
Direct beneficiaries per year: Volt Hockey opens the world of participating in a team sport to an underserved population of people living with physical disabilities, who have limited upper and lower body mobility, and otherwise are excluded from participating in adaptive sports. Last year we started the 2nd volt hockey program in the United States.
Geographic areas served: Volt Hockey enables those with different physical abilities, such as Spinal Cord Injuries, SMA, DMD, CP, Spina Bifida, people with an amputation, or other physical conditions to participate in adaptive sports, be a part of a community, learn the value of teamwork & working hard to achieve goals, and give their parents, friends and caregivers a great reason to cheer them on from the stands! Volt hockey is, (1) an organized and competitive sport where players use specialized power wheelchairs to maneuver a ball into a net to score goals, (2) an adaptive form of indoor floor hockey, and (3) an excellent opportunity to engage the community! A Volt Hockey wheelchair is powered and is equipped with a fixed stick which is mounted directly at the tip of the hockey chair. The chairs can be customized to adapt to an individual’s needs to offer additional physical support. Practice is held Saturdays from 3-5pm at the Hockomock Area YMCA in N. Attleboro, MA. Geographic Area Served: MA, RI, CT
Programs: Volt hockey adaptive team sport, team building social meetups, parent and caregiver support group, virtual meet&chat including volt hockey players from the US and Norway
