Sound Art provides music lessons to underprivileged children who would otherwise have no access to this life affirming experience. The goal isn't to find a protege or the next American Idol. The sole purpose is to give the kids an opportunity, in a fun environment, to learn self esteem and have success which they can carry through the rest of their lives. One of the most unusual aspects of our program is that we take it to the neighborhoods. Our founder and director, Catherine Goldwyn came up with the brilliant idea of hiring professional musicians to go to the sites as well as bring the instruments. Besides this making it much easier for the children to attend it means that we are able to operate with very low overhead so that almost all our funding goes directly to the programs. I've been on many site visits to watch the kids in action. It is clear that they are having a great time. I always leave with the hope and determination that Sound Art will be able to reach out to more kids. Personally this has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Sound Art provides opportunities for young women to engage in the practice of music that they would never have otherwise. By bringing music programs into under-served communities where they are needed and offering music education that is practical and fun, Sound Art is able to bring the joy of music-making to the girls AND boys who can most benefit from it.
Sound Art LA is not only a great non-profit organization but simply a great group of individuals. Comprised of people that are truly passionate about music and bringing it to low-income areas, Sound Art is focused and committed on improving the lives of others. I advise anybody who is interested in getting involved with non-profit work to check out Sound Art LA.
I was able to have one of my artists participate in a fundraising concert, and the staff at Sound Art are top notch! Everything was a breeze, and they are clearly very passionate about the foundation. Having grown up in schools where music programs were cut, I know how it feels to not have that outlet, and I think it's an amazing experience they are providing for these kids.
Sound Art is a phenomenal program. Hands down. I'm so privileged to be a board member and help spread the word. I have a deep love and appreciation for music and wish that I had had a music program like this gowing up....music fills us up and can change the way we see ourselves and the world around us. It's a universal language and a vehicle to promote change and positivity and should be available to any child.
Sound Art is a wonderfully creative way of giving back to the children of our inner-cities by providing them with the gift of musical instruction. By offering a wide spectrum of music programs, Sound Art is opening doors for any child who loves music but has not yet had the opportunity or the funds to follow his or her dream. With the guidance of professional musicians as instructors, students are inspired to follow their passion for music and encouraged to use their creativity to express themselves. Donating to this cause is an enriching way of giving back to the community and establishing a foundation for brighter and happier futures for these children.
Sound Art and it's hard working board members and volunteers are a powerful force, changing lives one note at a time. Sound Art brings music education to underfunded schools, after-school programs, and community centers. The power of music on the adolescent mind is profound. Famed composer Aaron Copland says it best: “To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable.” Thank you Sound Art for your continued dedication and effectiveness to such a righteous cause.
