Mission: Somerville community corporation (scc) is dedicated to maintaining diversity and preserving affordability in somerville by building and preserving housing, organizing for necessary policies and funding, and giving residents the financial skills they need to survive.
Programs: Rental programs - five of scc's rental housing developments are owned directly by scc: the 12 one and two-bedroom units at 110 walnut street; the 6 three-bedrooom units at 109 gilman street; the 18 two, three and four bedroom units at 33 bow street; the 14 single room occupancy units on sewall street; and the 8 one and two-bedroom units at 75 cross street. Scc's rental properties are managed by winn residential, under contract with scc.
housing development - for a community to be sustainable, there must be housing options available to people of all income levels. In order to keep somerville economically diverse, scc builds affordable rental housing, creates homeownership opportunities, and develops retail spaces. Scc owns 184 affordable rental units in 7 sites throughout somerville. Scc has produced over 100 units of affordable homeownership, beginning its development activities by purchasing dilapidated 1-3 family homes, rehabbing them, and reselling them to moderate and low-income buyers. More recently, scc developed two condominium projects with a total of 23 units between 2001 and 2006. In early 2014, scc completed the third, and final phase of new development. Program service accomplishments:24-units of affordable rental housing and 3 commercial spaces on the ground level; phase 2, completed in early 2012, provides an additional 29 units of affordable rental housing with a community room, open space and a playground; and phase 3 consists of an additional 31 units of affordable rental housing, bringing the total of new rental housing at the entire st. Polycarp village to 84 units. In early 2012, scc purchased the former boys and girls clubs property at 181 washington street. Zoning approval and state subsidy funds were granted in 2014, construction financing closed in may 2015, and groundbreaking is taking place july 2015. Scc is constructing 35 affordable rental apartments and ground level commercial space. In addition, scc purchased the former american legion post 388 at 163 glen street in 2014, and received zoning approval to renovate the former legion building and add two additional floors to create a new 11-unit mixed income condominium development. Construction on that development is anticipated to begin fall 2015. All of scc's rental properties are managed by winn residential, under contract with scc.
community organizing & planning - scc works to empower somerville residents to become active leaders in the community. Our members organize for affordable housing, local jobs, and grassroots planning, and have the opportunity to develop leadership skills through our annual leadership development institute. In recent years, scc's community organizing and planning work has led to (a) an increase in the housing linkage fee for new commercial development; (b) passage of the community preservation act in somerville; (c) the creation of a first source jobs program in somerville; and (d) the establishment of a path breaking memorandum of understanding among with the mbta and other partners to secure jobs for local residents in the construction and operation of the mbta's green line extension.
