Causes: Education, Literacy, Remedial Reading & Encouragement
Mission: To mobilize community-based collaborations to strengthen families through the creation or expansion of early development and learning opportunities for young children and their families.
Programs: Early birds school readiness program for parents of children prebirth to five years was provided in partnership with four school districts in oklahoma county and 2 other school districts. Parents attend 90 minute classes and learn about their child's development, discipline strategies, opportunities for everyday learning, supporting health and safety, and ways to play with your child to promote development. They receive books and educational toys and are taught how to read with their child. We served over 5,440 adults and their approximately 5,080 children birth to five years old, of which 7,672 lived in oklahoma county. Results from our follow-up calls with participants reported 98% playing the activities learned in early birds with their children and 80% reported a change in in the way they interacted with their child since participating in early birds.
smart start in the schools was provided in 60 elementary schools in two school districts. 2050 children and 1781 adults were served. Parents learn ways to read, sing, talk, play and hold their young children while making connections with other parents and their neighborhood elementary school. All participants reported on the end of class survey that they would recommend the class to others.
smart start central oklahoma provided training for professionals working directly with young children and families in 2014. The pre-k and kindergarten conference served 195 teachers. Conference topics included developing early literacy skills, writer's workshop, strengthening families, classroom management/discipline strategies, and are in the early childhood classroom.
