Mission: SLLEA provides quality, technology-equipped rental housing and ASD-specific services to adults with higher functioning autism, working with them to achieve and maintain meaningful independence and self-sufficiency in their lives.
Target demographics: Adults with higher functioning autism spectrum disorder
Programs: SLLEA's supported living and quality rental housing program fosters sustained personal growth across three pivotal adult-life areas: (1) independent living (2) post-secondary education and (3) career exploration and meaningful employment. Our autism-specific programming is carefully designed to progress and evolve with our students, promoting them to maximize their independence and enjoy the least restrictive and most normalized experience in independent and social living. Throughout SLLEA programming, we integrate direct support services with cognitive technology and other assistive software that are adapted to the needs and goals of each student, and designed together to promote greater self-management, organization and self-determination. Training and Assessment Program (TAP): For adults moving away from their family for the first time, SLLEA offers a unique introduction into independent living through our TAP home programming. In TAP, SLLEA offers a minimum 10-month, live-in program that provides comprehensive functional and home-skills training, support, oversight and guidance. Given that autism frequently presents with general anxiety disorder - a condition that can become debilitating with heightened stress -the 24/7 capability and immersive nature of TAP is critical to provide a structured, safe and stable environment where students can find success and build confidence as they learn to manage life on their own for the first time. Advanced Placement Program (APP): TAP graduates and individuals with higher assessed independent living skills may place into one of SLLEA's Advanced Placement Program (APP) tier homes where less intensive support levels are designed and provided to promote personal growth, and greater self-reliance and independence. As students feel ready, SLLEA also supports their choice to transition to their own apartment or house and remains available to provide ongoing individualized supports in their own home as they choose to meet their independent living, education and employment-related needs.
