Causes: Arts & Culture, Printing & Publishing
Mission: Small press distribution (spd) connects readers with writers by providing access to independently published literature. Spd allows essential but underrepresented literary communities to participate fully in the marketplace and in the culture at large through book distribution, information services, and public advocacy programs. Spd nurtures an environment in which the literary arts are valued and sustained.
Programs: Warehouse and fulfillment services for independent literary presses: this includes "picking, packing and shipping" more than 200,000 books a year from our warehouse while receiving more than 1,000 new books to inventory each year, plus maintaining customer service, billing, and other bookkeeping services for those sales.
marketing and publisher relations for independent literary presses: includes issuing reports and tracking fulfillment rates for our 400+ independent literary publishers, maintaining a website that receives more than 20,000 unique visitors a month, producing marketing material, such as our spd recommends bi-weekly email of new titles sent to booksellers, librarians, individuals and teachers, creating and disseminating marketing collateral, and providing direct marketing for our presses through trade show representation at the mla convention, awp conference and bookfair, oakland book festival, bay area book festival, northern california independent booksellers association trade show, book expo america and other trade shows and professional gatherings.
community outreach programming: this includes any non-fundraising events and programs, including outreach events. It also includes our poetry trading post which gives out free books in exchange for poems written on the spot at various locations and trade shows as well as an array of book clubs, classroom visits, educational programs, and literary readings around the bay area and the us.
