Mission: Founded in 1991 by James Houghton, the award-winning Signature produces fully staged works by playwrights-in-residence, including re-examinations of past writings, as well as New York and world premieres. Signature makes an extended commitment to a playwright's body of work, and during this journey, the writer is engaged in every aspect of the creative process. Signature offers the opportunity to experience the results of a playwright's direct involvement in the artistic production of a play, from start to finish, allowing tremendous insight into the scope, context, and substance of a playwright's work, legacy, and continuing achievements. By championing in-depth explorations of a living playwright's body of work, the Company delivers an intimate and immersive journey into the playwright's singular vision. For the past 16 years, the company has devoted an entire season to the work of a single playwright and has presented the work of Edward Albee, Lee Blessing, Horton Foote, Adrienne Kennedy, Maria Irene Fornes, John Guare, Bill Irwin, Romulus Linney, Arthur Miller, Sam Shepard, Paula Vogel, August Wilson, and Lanford Wilson. Signature remains deeply committed to these season-long residencies, and during the company's tenth and fifteenth anniversaries, Signature introduced an additional residency, the Legacy Program. The Legacy Program invites past playwrights-in-residence back to Signature through two series: the Signature Series, which presents "signature," or more well-known works; and the Premiere Series, which presents New York and world premieres. Signature is committed to presenting world-class theatre at an affordable price through The Signature Ticket Initiative, which will offer subsidized $20 tickets through the twentieth anniversary season in 2011. The seventeenth through twentieth seasons will present the work of Charles Mee, The Negro Ensemble Company, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Tony Kushner, as well as continue to feature the work of past Signature Playwrights-in-Residence.

Programs: Signature theatre's 2013/14 season was our first all-premiere season in over 10 years, and demonstrated our commitment to every writer's unique process and artistic impulse. In our third season at the center, we explored the work of david henry hwang in residency one; celebrated horton foote and august wilson through the legacy program; and featured new plays from four residency five writers: martha clarke, will eno, branden jacobs-jenkins, and regina taylor. We continue to make our programming affordable and accessible to all through the signature ticket initiative: a generation of access, which provides $25 tickets for every seat for the initial run of every production during our 2013/14 season. The signature ticket initiative: a generation of access is built on three core objectives: providing $25 subsidized tickets to the initial run of all of our productions; coupling that affordability with a diverse array of programming; and engaging in targeted outreach and awareness to identify new and non-traditional audiences. Signature made $25 tickets available to every seat for every performance during the initial run of every production in the 2013/14 season. In total, 68,304 tickets were sold through the initiative, including 6,667 subsidized subscription packages, offering our audiences the opportunity to experience high-quality off-broadway theatre at an affordable price.
