Mission: The mission of scm is to enhance the lives and expand the opportunities of children, youth, and adults of the shaw community in washington, d. C. Scm offers education, youth leadership development, and life skills programming to low income children and youth to develop them into responsible and productive adults.
Programs: Educational programs we provide academically robust after-school programs that serve 50 youth ages 5-18 each weekday, with one-on-one tutoring in reading, spelling and math. Our afterschool programs include structured educational support, guided recreation, meals and snacks, social and developmental outlets as well as workshops and seminars preparing youth for higher education and the workforce. We engage our youth in tutoring and enrichment services, life skills, arts and crafts, martial arts and dance classes, and stem instruction. Recognizing the importance of digital literacy for both schooling and job preparation, scm also offers training for all participants in a range of computer skills and programs. By providing resume-writing and college preparation programs, monthly parent meetings, and by serving as a direct employer of dozens of residents over the years, we also reach young adults and parents and seek additional ways to develop job skills amongst the families of shaw.
summer camps a six week summer day camp for 50 children provides full day activities including academically themed weeks, reading clubs, sports, team building, and enrichment field trips. Our summer programs include structured educational support, guided recreation, meals and snacks, tutoring and enrichment services, life skills, arts and crafts, martial arts, music, and dance classes, stem instruction, and digital literacy classes.
college scholarship program in order to encourage shaw residents to complete their goals for higher education, scms college scholarship program awards $1,000 per year to deserving shaw neighborhood students who are graduating high school or attending college. Students are selected through a well-established application process, written essays, transcripts, sat scores, and interviews.
