Mission: Shangri-La Corporation was founded in 1963 by families of young children with disabilities whose dream was to create a nurturing environment for their children with special needs. Shangri-La has since expanded to provide housing, employment and other specialized support services to individuals with disabilities, economic disadvantages or other barriers to employment in over 100 locations spanning nine Oregon counties.
I am proud to be a monthly contributor to Shangri-La! Even though my contribution is small, I am proud of the fact that I am making a commitment to help build communities that acknowledge and accept people with disabilities. My interactions with the organization and the people it serves continually challenges my perceptions of the abilities of people with disabilities. I also value that the majority of donor contributions go directly to support the individuals through a scholarship-type system.
After hearing that Shangri La hired a person who was discharged from a teaching position under negative circumstances and is under investigation in a missing persons case, I will never contribute to any fundraiser supporting Shangri La.
