Causes: Job Training
Mission: To provide literacy and job training services for economically disadvantaged rhode islanders so that they may improve their quality of life.
Programs: The department of human services (dhs) transitional employment program is designed to assist families in making the transition from public assistance to unsubsidized employment. This program provides temporary assistance for needy families recipients with job preparation, job placement, and retention services intended to lead toward economic self-sufficiency. During the year ended december 31, 2017, 1,460 clients were referred by dhs for services. Of these, 868 individuals were enrolled and served in these programs with 206 entering employment.
senior community service employment program (scsep)- this program is funded by the us department of labor under title v through ser-national and the rhode island department of labor and training. The organization was a sub-grantee and successfully completed its contracts during 2017 with 163 low-income seniors, aged 55 and older, residing throughout rhode island enrolled and receiving services at the time of the completion of the two contracts.
youth programs - ser has a summer youth work experience program. During the year ended december 31, 2017, the program served 102 youth, aged 14-21, from central falls and pawtucket in a six-week combination of world of work classroom and work experience site placement, with 7 youth entering employment. Funding was provided through state of rhode island job development funds. In 2017, ser began the central falls in-school work experience program, which served 19 high school juniors and seniors from march-june by providing work readiness training, case management, and hands-on, subsidized work experience at local employers; 4 youth entered employment. Ser also maintains an ongoing memorandum of (continued on schedule o)understanding with the ccap/pawtucket youth center to develop employment training sites at local businesses for youth served by the center.
reentry program - the reentry program started in july 2017 and welcomes returning citizens, both walk-ins and referrals from probation/parole, providing case management and assistance in finding and securing unsubsidized employment. In 2017, 16 participants received services with 4 entering employment.
