Causes: Botanical Gardens & Arboreta, Environment
Mission: To stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening with open meetings, conferences, correspondence, and publications. To improve the quality of the environment by conservation, civic improvement and education.
Programs: Seattle garden club (sgc) celebrated our 100th anniversary by making a $100,000 grant to the washington park arboretum to build the azalea way centennial garden, a new garden in the arboretum. Members also volunteered with the arboretum to help plant shrubs and perennials in the new garden. Additionally, sgc made smaller donations totaling $3,000 to 23 non-profit organizations throughout the puget sound region, and contributed to the uw center for urban horticulture (cuh) for renovation, new plantings and maintenance of the public fragrance garden at cuh, a total of $7,700. Members also helped plant and maintain the garden throughout the year. To further the knowledge and awareness of members and their guests, sgc held 5 general meetings with speakers on horticultural, conservation, gardening and related topics. In addition, 7 horticultural meetings were held with speakers focused specifically on that subject. An informative newsletter with community project information, volunteer opportunities and articles on horticulture, conservation, gardening and other related topics was compiled and sent to each member monthly.
