Programs: Sculpturecenter's (sc) programs explore and reflect the current concerns of and around contemporary sculpture. Taking the history and legacy of sculpture as our foundation, we consider the ways that artists are thinking about three-dimensional work. In supporting new ideas and artistic research, sculpturecenter identifies the most compelling practices and experiments that relate to the history of sculpture. Sculpturecenter introduces emerging artists, commissions major work of the highest quality, and provides direct support to the artists for the creation of new work, including production funds, curatorial support, and honoraria. (continued on schedule o) as a non-collecting museum, sculpturecenter's annual exhibition program includes 1-2 commissioned works by mid-career artists, our annual "in practice" open call program featuring new commissions by 10-15 emerging artists, and 3-6 solo and group exhibitions. To facilitate deep public engagement and encourage dialogue between visitors of all ages, artists, and their work, sculpturecenter hosts free events and programs that complement our exhibitions, including lectures, panel discussions, readings, video screenings, performances, and special public and educational programs for families, children, and teens. In fy2017, sculpturecenter presented a critically-acclaimed season featuring over 30 artists presented through 7 exhibitions and one public art installation. Highlights include the first new york solo museum exhibition of german artist cosima von bonin; a solo show by new york-based artist sam anderson; the u. S. Debut of british artist charlotte prodger; and the first u. S. Museum solo exhibitions dedicated to new york artist aki sasamoto, peruvian artist teresa burga, and the cercle d'art des travailleurs de plantation congolaise (congolese plantation workers art league or catpc), an art collective of plantation workers based in congo. Sc presented its signature "in practice" annual open call exhibition program, which featured 25 new commissions by 15 artists and artist teams. Additionally, sculpturecenter debuted a large-scale public art billboard installation by alejandro cesarco that was commissioned through our "public process" program. Sculpturecenter's diverse programming expands upon our mission and enriches the discourse between our artists and audiences. Sculpturecenter continued its publications program with 7 exhibition catalogs, as well as the release of "how does it feel? ", the third installment of our "inquiries into contemporary sculpture" series. Sc offered 9 free public and community engagement programs including our popular "sc conversations" artist and curator talks with diedrich diederichsen, ohad meromi, and a panel discussion as part of the catpc exhibition. Sculpturecenter also debuted "clay club", a family-friendly event that opened our space to the public as a large-scale community sculpture studio with artist-led activities. Our "public process" public art and education initiative invited 15 high school students to participate in a summer intensive course on public art and urban design, culminating in the opportunity to play a central role in commissioning and presenting a public artwork.
