Mission: SOAL: SavingOurAncestorsLegacy recovers the personal and community stories of Black People in American History reconnecting ancestors and descendants, through cemetery restoration, historic conservation & preservation work, crowdsourced & community-based public history research, storytelling, and the use & development of new digital tools & platforms.
Results: Since June of 2021, SOAL has built a community around their efforts to restore one of Pennsylvania's oldest historic Black Cemeteries! SOAL's descendant-led, 100% volunteer-powered nonprofit is a grassroots effort in radical history reclamation. By partnering with descendants, neighbors, local leaders, historians, tech companies, universities, other nonprofits, and specialists in monument restoration & historic preservation SOAL has made an indelible change in the social fabric & the landscape: becoming an international leader in the landscape of Black Cemetery restoration.
Target demographics: save American History, preserve cultural resources, educate youth, advance new digital technologies
