Causes: Animals, Wildlife Preservation & Protection
Mission: The primary activity of the santa barbara marine mammal center is the rescue, rehabilitation and release of trapped and endangered marine mammals, (whales, dolphins, porpoises, sea lions, and seals) as well as sea turtles, along the california coast from malibu to the san luis obispo county line, including the channel islands.
Programs: In 2014, the santa barbara marine mammal center rescued 320 california sea lions, 50 northern elephant seals, 10 pacific harbor seals, and others for a total of over 500 animals. This was the busiest year over the past 38 years for the santa barbara marine mammal center. No one cause is attributable to these unusual numbers; numerous factors are involved. The center's work has become even more vital in light of the tremendous numbers of recent strandings. Moreover, the centers success rate continues to be the best of any marine mammal rescue organization in the world. Since its start in 1976, the center has saved between 80 and 90 percent of the animals it takes in for treatment, year after year.
