Mission: Founded in 1978, the san francisco girls chorus is an internationally acclaimed center for choral music performances and education for girls and young women ages 7-18.
Programs: Generalfor more than 30 years, the san francisco girls chorus has been recognized as one of the world's most respected vocal ensembles. Its level of training, performance, quality, range, and leadership in commissioning music for treble voices are lauded by musicians, critics, and audiences. San francisco symphony music director michael tilson thomas says, "the san francisco girls chorus is a treasure. Their training, musicality, and vibrant spirit are evident whenever they perform. I have enjoyed our long association and look forward to many years of collaboration. "almost 400 singers from all nine bay area counties participated in sfgc's programs during 2013-2014. artistic leadership:in 2014, the quality and aspirations of the chorus have never been greater. In 2013 sfgcs board of directors engaged two new artistic leaders, music director and principal conductor, valrie sainte-agathe and artistic director lisa bielawa. Valrie sainte-agathe formerly served as musical director for the junior opera and young singers program of the montpellier national symphony and opera in montpellier, france from 1998 through 2011. In this capacity she trained young singers for opera and symphony concerts and productions. Lisa bielawa, winner of the rome prize in music composition and vocalist with the touring ensembles of philip glass and john zorn, is also an sfgc alumna. community impact and outreach:during 2013-2014, more than 350 choristers, ranging from 5-18 years, were enrolled in sfgc's core programs, the chorus school and girls chorus. Singers came from 45 cities in all 9 san francisco bay area counties. Of these, 32% received full or partial financial aid. Sfgc strives to reflect the geographic, racial, and economic diversity of the bay area and is proud to be ethnically, culturally, and socio-economically diverse. Participation in the chorus school and girls chorus offers a diverse group of girls a world-class music education and access to professional levels of performance.
