Mission: Safe Harbor was founded in 1998 by Dan Stradford, a corporate executive who, as a child, saw his father devastated by shock therapy and heavy psychiatric drugs. Seeking to find safer, more effective help for the mentally ill, he founded Safe Harbor and created AlternativeMentalHealth.com, which offers full information on safe mental health treatments. Studies have shown that a very high percentage of the mentally ill have symptoms that are due to medical problems, allergies, nutritional imbalances, toxic conditions and other reversible causes. Safe Harbor emphasizes the importance of nutrition, diet and proper medical exams to reverse the symptoms of mental illness. Many successful programs and treatment protocols exist in the United States for reversing mental illness and reducing or eliminating the need for drugs, but they receive little attention because they cannot compete with the marketing campaigns of pharmaceutical companies. Safe Harbor offers the public a clearinghouse where they can access information on safe and successful approaches. Thousands across the U.S. have recovered from mental illness without drugs. We make their stories known and we give hope to others. Safe Harbor's motto is "We change lives every day." The mentally ill are usually told they will never get well and that they will be dependent on powerful, debilitating drugs the rest of their lives. We have helped save many from that fate.
