Ross Valley Players is a remarkable resource for its community - a producer of high-quality, reasonably priced theater that provides a creative outlet for dozens of actors, technicians, and designers every year. Geographic areas served: Marin County, CA; San Francisco, CA
Programs: Ross valley players (rvp) presents a main season of six majorproductions performed between july and june of the following calendar year. For fiscal year 7/1/16 thru 6/30/17 there were 20performances for each of "sylvia" and "private livesx; 19 performances each of "robin hood" and "h. M. S. Pinaforex; and 16 performances each of "emilie" and "bus stop". The audience breakdown varies from one production to anotherbased on the particular play, including such factors as play namerecognition, subject matter and content, whether the play is anew script or a classic, and whether the playwright is well known. The attendance for the six productions was about 7,250 plus 550 volunteers. Ticket categories included general admission and greatly reduced prices for those under age 25. The productions include students in acting roles as well as in technician assignments. Having students and those under age 25 involved in productions helps rvp to accomplish its mission to provide an open, collaborative environment in which to learn and develop theater crafts.
"the second largest activity is rvp's raw festival (raw = rossalternative works). Until 2009, rvp had staged readings of newplays by san francisco bay area playwrights who have written a play that has not yet been produced and which may still be awork in progress. In july, 2009, rvp decided to improve the presentation of suchnew works from a staged reading to a full production withmemorization of the script, stage movement, costumes, stagelighting, and sound effects. The intent was to provide audienceswith a more complete presentation and to provide the playwrightwith the opportunity to see and hear a more complete productionof his or her creative work in front of live audiences and to receivetheir immediate feedback in talkback sessions. This fiscal year there was one full production of "way out west", a fictional depiction of life during the gold rush period in california. The production had twelve performances and an audience of 665 plus 60 volunteers. We often include students in both acting roles and in technical assignments. In addition, raw had a staged reading of "sand game", a new play, to provide audience feedback to the playwright. An audience of 50 attended and participated in the talk back. Additionally, rvp produced a staged reading of "fellowship" with an audience about 35 patrons. Total audience for "way out west" and the two staged readings was about 750 plus 70 volunteers.
