Mission: The society is committed to the preservation and creative nurturing of historic ideals of classical reform judaism with its progressive spiritual values, intellectual foundations and distinctive worship traditions.
Programs: Publication program - publication and distribution of the following resources: the union prayer book-sinai edition, revised (2012) - a contemporary language version of reform judaisms history liturgy, being used by congregations throughout the country, as well as our seminary, the hebrew union college. Published in cooperation with chicago sinai congregation. The new union haggadah (2014)- a new revision of the historic passover lithury of the reform movement, edited by rabbi howard a. Berman, rabbinic director of the society, and published by the central conference of american rabbis. The rise and growth of reform judaism (2015)-a new edition of the two volume classic documentary history of the reform movement throughout the world, with a new introduction and supplementary material by rabbi howard a. Berman, and published by the jewish publication society of america. Bhadrat kodesh- the majesty of holiness (2015)-an anthology of texts from the union prayer book-sinai edition, revised,translated into hebrew, from use by reform synagogues in israel. Edited and introduced by rabbi howard a. Berman, and published by the society in cooperation with har-el congregation, jerusalem. The reform advocate-the societys periodic journal, with a circulation of 1,500. The reform advocate offers regular reports on the societys activities, articles and essays on the theology, practices and history of reforn judaism. Also included in the publication program is the distribution of our compact disc recordings; come o sabbath day: sabbath worship in the tradion of classical reform judaism and open the gates unto us: high holy day music of the reform tradition. These cds have been distributed to over 2,000 individuals.
national outreach- presentation of sermons, educational programs and worship services at national, and regional gatherings of the reform movement and at local reform congregations throughout the country. Objective to educate the broader reform jewish community on the mission and work of the society, to expand congregational affiliates and individual supporters. In 2017 these programs reached over 6,000 indivuals.
social media program - this program uses social media to introduce and educate people about the society for classical reform judaism (scrj) and about the relevance, power and beauty of classical reform judaism (cr) for spiritual seekers in the 21st century. The goal is to create and maintain a strong internet presence through the use of our website, blog and facebook page. This is achieved through :weekly blog posts and facebook entries that are relevant to cr and scrj and engaging to the general public and; adding educational content on our website, such as the posting of scholarly papers, articles by scrj supporters, educational videos, links to like-minded and supportive organizations, info for acquiring cr prayer books and music, announcement of cr conferences, promotion of cr programs, etc. The program is also responsible for upgrading our sites as needed to meet the growth and demands of our organization and supporters.
the societys partnership at hebrew union college - jewish institute of religion, the semnary of the reform movement, at its campuses in cincinnati, los angeles and jerusalem. The program provies academic resources and educational materials for the students in rabbinic, cantorial and educational programs- supporting their studies and the principles and tradions of the reform jewish heritage. 100 students and faculty are currently participating in the various aspects of this program.
