Mission: Root Awakening is a movement that mobilizes people around the world to fight extreme poverty in the Horn of Africa.
Programs:
The Forgotten Children Program aims to meet the deepest and most pressing needs of neglected and impoverished children in Somaliland. Root Awakening seeks to partner with individuals and organizations that are already making a difference in the lives of hurting children. The program extends far beyond a partnership with one orphanage or organization. It's about changing the lives of thousands of children for generations to come.
In 2009, we had the opportunity to meet Sama Wada, an elderly woman who has given her life to help needy children in Somaliland. For the past 22 years, Sama Wada has rescued and adopted more than 200 abandoned children. She has also started six schools that offer free education to more than 750 children. Root Awakening partners with people like Sama Wada to impact the lives of underprivileged children.
We also partner with an orphanage located in the heart of the capital city of Hargeisa. Over 300 children live at the orphanage. Many of these kids are the result of "illegal pregnancies" where their parents were not married and the children were abandoned shortly after birth. RA works with the orphanage to provide day trips to playgrounds for the kids and basic necessities such as baby formula, clothing, shoes, and school supplies.
