Causes: Mental Health, Substance Abuse Prevention
Mission: Rise Above Colorado (Colorado Meth Project Inc.) is a substance use prevention organization that measurably impacts teen perceptions and attitudes about the risks of substance abuse to help youth make empowered, healthy choices and lead a life free of drug misuse and addiction.
Results: Rise Above is demonstrating through its efforts how it is creating short-term changes in knowledge and attitudes that contribute to positive long-term declines in youth substance use in Colorado. In 2018-19 our “Not Prescribed” educational resource demonstrated that more than 7 in 10 youth participants increased knowledge about the risks of Rx misuse, while 57% reported an increased perception of risk. Such programs contribute to the state’s declining youth misuse of prescription drugs, down 24% from 2015-2017 (Healthy Kids Colorado Survey).
Target demographics: empower youth to a life free of substance misuse and addiction
Direct beneficiaries per year: More than 10,000 youth directly participate in our programs and through our paid media campaign we are able to reach more than 90% of Colorado teens, or roughly 370,000 youth.
Geographic areas served: Across Colorado in partnership with local community agencies
Programs: Rise Above Colorado implements prevention strategies at the community and societal levels to measurably impact attitudes (e.g. perception of harm, perception of peer use, help-seeking attitudes, etc.), knowledge (e.g. appropriate and inappropriate use of prescription drugs, teen brain science, mental health, etc.), and skills (e.g. media literacy, healthy decision-making, stress management, refusal skills, etc.) among youth aged 12-17. Rise Above achieves these objectives through direct-to-youth communications, peer-to-peer engagement and resource delivery by youth-serving partner organizations.
