Mission: Regis was created by the gift of an anonymous benefactor, who intended the Society of Jesus to operate a free school for boys who were unable to afford an education at Loyola School or Xavier H.S. Competition for admission quickly made it a school for gifted boys in the Archdiocese of N.Y. and eventually throughout the metropolitan area. A competitive exam was introduced in the 1920s and an interview added in the late 1960s. The family maintained full funding of the school until 1969 when alumni were invited to participate in financially supporting it. During the last two decades alumni have been the main support since the most family members have passed away.
