Causes: Developmentally Disabled Centers, Disabilities, Human Services
Mission: In the community of people with developmental disabilities loneliness and isolation are additional disabling factors. Agencies have documented the following behavior resulting from this marginalization: frequent visits to Emergency Rooms, late night phone calls to acquaintances for support, problems with alcoholism and drug abuse, increased consumption of food and resulting weight gains, aggressive and violent behaviors toward family members and friends, absenteeism from work, and increased depression. One very encouraging solution is the introduction of opportunities for groups of disabled people to socialize.
Programs: Our goal is to help our clients have the strong social support and fulfilling activities that we all need. We strongly feel that EVERYONE deserves "a life". This means more than simply breathing, working and paying the bills - a life includes socializing and hobbies and getting involved within your community. We offer an unprecedented breadth of recreation services: a Lions Club, a Weight Watchers group, a monthly countywide dance, a basketball team which plays people from the general public, a World Beat Dance class and several other classes and events which help clients participate in their community.
