Causes: Community Clinics, Health
Mission: The organization is dedicated to the early detection of breast cancer through the administration of two programs - the free mammography outreach program (fmop) and community awareness and outreach program.
Programs: The free mammography outreach program targets two populations of identified need, the hispanic and african american women who are low income and underinsured. As administrator, reach out for life distributes vouchers to free clinics and medical centers that act as the medical home bases for the underserved population. Those partners qualify program participants as below the 200% federal poverty level and underinsured. They set appointments with participating imaging center partners which provide procedures at discounted rates. The program does not discriminate for general health, age or citizenship, and the women served receive all recommended screening and diagnostic procedures at no cost. Approximately 485 vouchers were distributed during our first year of operation. There were 466 medical appointments completed and 534 medical procedures provided.
the community awareness & outreach program is important accessory program. The reach out campaign identifies women in need of support and provides educational materials to build understanding of the need for early detection through regular mammograms within this vulnerable population. The greatest barrier to care is the fear that women have of what a mammogram might reveal. Often they feel that they cannot deal with one more problem in life. Community awareness initiatives target african americans and hispanic populations and these two groups account for 76% of participants in the free mammography program.
