Mission: Provisions is an arts and social change learning resource amplifying compelling voices that challenge and redefine the mainstream. Its library and online services are a trusted source for alternative perspectives on a wide range of social change topics and its innovative exhibitions strongly engage the arts as a powerful means of exploring social issues and as an agent of change. Provisions features on-site programs such as exhibitions, screenings, workshops as well as fully-accessible online study guides, virtual exhibitions and up-to-date information through its weblog Signal Fire. Provisions is grounded in the values of peace, justice, sustainability, social responsibility and respect for the diversity of life.
Programs: - The Arts: Four world-class art exhibitions each with a corresponding educational panel discussion, library resource integration, group tours and bibliography and related web materials. One of the annual exhibits coincides with our annual Institute for Arts and Social Change (see Education below) and another has a major public art exhibition component (need more detail about this public art component); - Education: Provisions? education programming in 2005 will consist of an integrated series of panel discussions, symposia, films, lectures that are closely related to exhibits throughout the year. This will culminate in an international Art and Social Change Institute in June, 2006 which will be the centerpiece of Provisions' summer program activities. This event will gather over 200 participants from across the DC metropolitan area and internationally to spotlight the convergence of art and activism. This gathering will highlight the most innovative, engaging and inspiring artists, thinkers, activists and theorists, many of whom have worked on projects with Provisions in the past several years. In addition, Provisions will build on past successes working with local schools and youth groups through the planned development of an arts?based curriculum and targeted outreach activities, curriculum support and program enhancement for teachers, and exhibition tours for youth groups. - Library and Information Resources: The library collection is cross-disciplinary, multi-cultural and international in scope, with over 3500 volumes and 350 periodical subscriptions. Provisions singular collection of alternative information and resources for the study of social change will be greatly enhanced with the redesign and launch in late 2005 of its website. New online features will include: 1) research tools such as the Meridians, facilitating greater access to over 30 topic areas based on the movements, nations, communities and perspectives represented in the library's collection; 2) research guides bibliographies, discographies, filmographies, Internet resources); and 3) basic introductory texts and an image-based section on social activist arts.
