Mission: Providence neighborhood planting program("pnpp") is dedicated to increasing and preserving the tree canopy of the city of providence. Under the program, small neighborhood groups apply to have street trees planted in their neighborhood. The trees are free to the neighborhood with the cost of the trees being split by pnpp and the city of providence. The program serves to plant trees in disadvantaged neighborhoods, as a means of helping to build the community and bring together volunteers. Pnpp also works with other non-profit organizations and the providence forestry division to educate citizens about the benefits of trees in reducing carbon emissions, air conditioning and water runoff.
Programs: Engaged in various programs to support the tree canopy in providence, rhode island and its neighboring communities by planting street trees and participating in community events. In fiscal year 2017, through 29 different neighborhood plantings applications, pnpp planted 538 street trees across the city of providence. Pnpp worked with neighbors, residents, community groups, churches, schools and businesses. In partnership with the providence parks department's division of foresty, pnpp also launched providence citizen foresters-a program to train and authorize interested residents in pruning and maintaining young city trees.
