Mission: X-TRA is a quarterly journal published by the Project X Foundation for Art & Criticism to promote and provoke intelligent critical discourse about contemporary visual art in Los Angeles, and beyond. Project X Foundation creates and supports artist-driven projects that expand artists' voices within contemporary art dialogue and promote engagement with contemporary art and artists. For over 17 years we have accomplished this mission with publication of X-TRA. In addition, newly created Project X Projects is an umbrella under which we produce new artist's publications, public programming and exhibitions. Based in Los Angeles, X-TRA's content gives voice to, and is deeply inflected by the particular impact and vision of artists in our city.
Results: Project X has built a strong foundation for the next stage of growth. After years of carefully managing the growth of our small budget and effective use of volunteers, two challenges lay ahead for us in the near term, as we prepare for the next chapter in the history of Project X: 1) To have our newly created Executive Director position become our first, full-time "real" employee, and 2) To grow the budget sufficient to support our new more expansive mission in a sustainable and manageable manner. It is an exciting time of transition for Project X Foundation and X-TRA. The challenges we face are quality challenges, and the increasing recognition and support from our community gives us confidence that we will meet them, as we have time and again over years.
