Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Human Services
Mission: To advocate for, represent and inform professional students at the university of minnesota.
Programs: The professional student government (psg) is a multilateral organization that acts as a resource for its member councils, a central contact for university administrators, and a crucial nexus of interdisciplinary communication among students. The goals of psg are to support academic excellence, advocate on behalf of professional students, create an interdisciplinary community and provide grants to students. Policy items were pursued at various administrative levels. Psg distributes a large portion of its funds as grants. Hundreds of grants are distributed to students and organizations. Applicants are generally very satisfied with the grants process. These grants include academic initiative grants, social events grants, professional development grants, and inter-council event grants. Psg also helps organize a visit to the state capitol every year to advocate for university of minnesota students. We orchestrated a number of events throughout the year, such as student trip to watch the twins, which was attended by over 1,000 students. Some of our policy-themed items included work on improving mental health resources, ensuring transparency in student conduct code processes, improving the student service fee system, encouraging conversations about diversity and inclusion, and more. Much of our year was also focused on fostering relationships with the other student governments on campus. The transition to having separate governments for graduate and professional students has been very successful. Since that transition, we have focused on ways to improve collaboration between our councils and gather feedback from the student body. Progress under the new system has been met very positively.
